Just a few miles from the picturesque medieval village of Gruyères, the resort of Moléson-sur-Gruyères embodies the very essence of Swiss skiing: an authentic, accessible alpine setting with modern facilities and a varied offering combining sport, gastronomy, and spectacular views.
Located in the canton of Fribourg, this family-friendly resort appeals to both beginners and experienced skiers looking for a relaxed, uncrowded getaway with a strong local flavor. The Moléson, at an altitude of 2,002 meters, dominates the La Gruyère region and is considered one of the most emblematic peaks of the Fribourg Pre-Alps. Moléson sur Gruyères, a well-connected and charming ski area
The Moléson-Gruyères ski area offers 30 kilometers of slopes located between 1,109 and 1,978 meters, with six lifts(funicular, cable car, chairlifts, and ski lifts) that ensure smooth circulation throughout the area. The slopes are perfectly suited to beginners, families, and intermediate skiers, with gentle descents and a few more technical runs from the summit adding excitement to the journey.
The Moléson-sur-Gruyères → Plan-Francey funicular (1,111 m to 1,520 m) is the first stage of the ascent and connects to the cable car to the summit of Moléson, where there is a panoramic viewpoint and a mountain restaurant. This fast, stair-free access system makes it a very convenient resort even for occasional visitors or families with young children.
On clear days, the summit offers a 360° view of the Alps and Swiss lakes, a natural spectacle that alone justifies a visit.
Varied ski slopes, guaranteed snow, and a relaxed atmosphere
Although not a large resort, Moléson-Gruyères surprises with the quality of its slopes and the care taken with the terrain.
The lower areas are perfect for learning, while the “Piste du Sommet”—a black run that descends from the top—challenges the most experienced skiers. The orientation of the slopes, combined with the artificial snow system, ensures good snow conditions throughout the season. The daily ski pass is also reasonably priced (around 38 Swiss francs in high season), making Moléson an excellent choice in the western Swiss Alps.
Activities and experiences beyond skiing
Moléson-Gruyères is not just a ski resort: it is a four-season destination that remains attractive throughout the year.
- Night skiing and alpine cuisine: on Thursday and Friday evenings, the funicular and cable car stay open until 11:00 p.m., allowing you to enjoy skiing under the stars and a panoramic dinner at the summit restaurant.
- Premiers Pas Snowpark: a fun area with modules and small jumps, perfect for beginners to freestyle skiing.
- 4 km toboggan run: connecting Plan-Francey with the village, this is one of the most fun family activities in the valley.
- Hiking and summer activities: in summer, the slopes are transformed into panoramic trails, via ferrata routes, and mountain bike trails, all with direct access from the cable car station.
The panoramic restaurant at Moléson offers local specialties such as fondue moitié-moitié and raclette fribourgeoise, served with breathtaking views. A perfect plan for combining nature, gastronomy, and relaxation.
