The opening of the Val Thorens resort, famous for being the highest in Europe, will be officially launched on 23 and 24 November 2024 during the ‘La Grande Première’ event. This festive weekend has become a not-to-be-missed event for winter sports fans, attracting more than 12,000 visitors every year to discover the first runs and enjoy the exceptional snow conditions guaranteed by the resort’s high altitude (2,300 m).

With 150 kilometres of ski runs and access to the 3 Vallées ski area (600 km of runs), Val Thorens offers an incomparable playground. Last year, the resort recorded an average snow depth of 70 centimetres from the moment it opened, offering skiers an exceptional quality of skiing.

Val Thorens opens on 23 and 24 November: try out the new features and enjoy exclusive experiences

During the ‘La Grande Première’ event, Val Thorens becomes the stage for innovations for the ski industry. The test village is a must-see attraction, where visitors can try out the latest models of skis and snowboards free of charge, even before they go on sale.

More than 60 international brands will be present, offering skiers the chance to try out more than 500 pairs of skis and snowboards. Leading brands such as Head, Burton, Dynastar and Black Crows will be showcasing their cutting-edge models, incorporating advanced technologies such as anti-vibration systems and ultra-light materials.

In 2023, the tests attracted more than 6,000 participants, and the skiers’ feedback enabled the brands to gather real-time opinions on their products. This is a rare opportunity for visitors to discover the latest technological advances, such as skis equipped with anti-vibration technology, or ultra-light carbon fibre snowboards. The tests are supervised by experts, guaranteeing an optimal experience for all levels, from beginner to expert.

At the same time, the resort is continuing to modernise with innovative infrastructure such as the new 2 Lacs gondola lift, which replaces the old chairlift. Capable of transporting 3,500 people an hour, the new installation improves access to the slopes and considerably reduces waiting times. Thanks to technologies such as Snowsat, the intelligent management of the snow guns means that snow production can be optimised and quality coverage guaranteed throughout the resort.

A festive and friendly atmosphere on the slopes

The opening day atmosphere at Val Thorens is particularly festive and friendly, creating a unique atmosphere on the slopes and in the village. The festivities include live concerts, DJ entertainment, and freestyle demonstrations that capture the attention of spectators. Last year, over 15 artists took to the stage, including electro and pop bands, bringing an incredible energy to the event.

For families, fun activities are organised throughout the weekend. For example, children can take part in snow treasure hunts, snowman-building workshops and toboggan rides. The 6-kilometre Cosmojet toboggan run offers an unforgettable experience for young and old alike, with tight bends and high-speed sections. In 2023, over 3,000 descents were recorded during the opening weekend.

Privileged access to the best snow conditions

One of the main advantages of taking part in the opening of Val Thorens is the quality of the snow. Thanks to its altitude and the first abundant snowfalls of the season, the resort benefits from optimal snow conditions from November onwards. In 2023, the average snow depth at opening was 70 centimetres, providing perfect conditions for skiers and snowboarders.

The pistes are meticulously prepared, with a team of 150 groomers working day and night to ensure a smooth, safe surface. Val Thorens invests over €2 million every year in maintaining its slopes and improving its equipment, ensuring a premium skiing experience from the very first days of the season.

In addition, the resort is equipped with 400 snow cannons, capable of covering more than 50% of the ski area with artificial snow if necessary. This technology complements natural snowmaking and ensures that as many runs as possible are open, even in the event of unforeseen weather conditions.

A unique experience in the heart of the French Alps

On this opening weekend, you’ll enjoy an authentic experience in one of Europe’s most award-winning resorts. Val Thorens has been voted ‘Best Ski Resort in the World’ on several occasions, thanks to the quality of its infrastructure, its warm welcome and its commitment to innovation. With modern lifts such as the Funitel de Péclet and the Cime Caron gondola, you can reach the summits in just a few minutes and enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the French Alps.
