Skiing in Jaun: the resort’s highlights
Jaun, also known as Bellegarde in French, is a little hidden gem in the canton of Fribourg, at the foot of the Swiss Pre-Alps. This charming mountain village, the only German-speaking one in the region, offers an authentic, family-friendly and peaceful skiing experience, far from the hustle and bustle of the larger resorts. Located at an altitude of 1,030 meters, it combines Fribourg hospitality, Alpine tradition and a beautiful natural environment dominated by the Gastlosen and Vanil Noir massifs.
A modest ski area with character
The Jaun ski area extends between 1,030 and 1,580 meters above sea level, with around 25 km of carefully groomed slopes. Although not a large resort, the terrain is varied and offers interesting runs for both beginners and intermediate skiers.
The slopes face north, ensuring good snow conditions throughout the season. The main ski lift departs directly from the village and takes you to the upper area, where you can enjoy magnificent views of the Fribourg Pre-Alps.
Family atmosphere and authenticity
Jaun is, above all, a family resort. Its ski school is highly regarded for the personalized attention and safety it offers children and beginners.
The atmosphere in the village is peaceful and welcoming: wooden chalets, traditional farms, and a local community that keeps Alpine customs alive.
Prices are more affordable than in other parts of Switzerland, making Jaun an excellent choice for families or groups looking for a genuine experience without compromising on quality.
Nature and unspoiled surroundings
The landscape surrounding Jaun is breathtakingly beautiful. The rock formations of the Gastlosen, known as the “Swiss Dolomites,” create a spectacular backdrop for skiing and winter hiking.
The area is part of the Gruyère Pays-d’Enhaut Nature Park, a territory committed to sustainability and the preservation of natural and cultural heritage.
Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and sleigh rides complete an offering focused on nature and well-being.
Traditional cuisine from rural Fribourg
The cuisine in Jaun reflects the authenticity of the canton of Fribourg. Local restaurants offer moitié-moitié fondues, rösti, and mountain soups made with products from neighboring farms.
The Hochmatt restaurant and the Gasthof zum Roten Kreuz are local favorites, known for their home-style cooking and family atmosphere.
Thermal baths and relaxation in the surrounding area
Although Jaun does not have its own thermal baths, it is just a few kilometers from Charmey, where the Bains de la Gruyère offer a winter wellness experience with views of the Vanil Noir. Combining skiing in Jaun with an afternoon at the thermal baths is one of the most recommended pleasures of winter in Fribourg.
