Skiing in Méaudre: the resort’s strong points

The small resort of Méaudre, part of the Autrans-Méaudre en Vercors ski area, has a special charm that combines tradition, a family atmosphere, and versatility in alpine and Nordic skiing. With a vertical drop of over 600 m between its peaks (from 1,012 m to 1,600 m), Méaudre offers a modest but well-structured range of skiing options, ideal for those seeking authenticity and a less crowded experience.

The alpine domain in Méaudre has around 10 alpine ski slopes, supported by two four-seater chairlifts and two ski lifts, with 26 snow cannons ensuring good coverage throughout the season. In total, the downhill ski area offers around 18 km of slopes distributed between easy, intermediate, and some more demanding runs. There is a clear predominance of green and blue slopes, designed for beginners and families, although there is also a black slope for those looking for a little more of a challenge.

One of the most notable features of Méaudre is its dual vocation: not only does it offer downhill skiing, but it is also part of one of the most renowned cross-country skiing areas in France. The Autrans-Méaudre ski area has a total of around 180 km of Nordic trails, with scenic routes offering views of the Alps and varied trails through forests and plateaus. This makes Méaudre an attractive destination for those who want to combine downhill and cross-country skiing in one place.

Another of its strengths lies in its peaceful, community atmosphere. Méaudre does not aspire to compete with large alpine resorts: its modest size allows for local management, a relaxed atmosphere, and a more intimate experience, far from the crowds. This human scale is an asset when traveling with family or groups looking to enjoy themselves without rushing or long journeys.

Snow coverage has also been carefully considered: the cannons and the orientation of the slopes help to maintain the quality of the skiable snow even when natural conditions are not ideal. In addition, many slopes face east, guaranteeing sunshine in the morning; in the late afternoon, it is necessary to reach the higher elevations to prolong sun exposure on the descents.

For those who want to improve their downhill skiing, Méaudre has fun slopes and teaching areas. In the Autrans – La Sure area, there is a slope called “Les Marmottons” and a boardercross, which combine entertainment and technical practice. In general, the Autrans-Méaudre alpine area is considered ideal for progressing, with a well-established ski school and slopes adapted to beginner levels.

However, Méaudre also has its limitations. As it is not very high in altitude and does not cover a large area, there are few black runs and difficult descents are not its main strength. In addition, as it relies partly on Nordic skiing for its distinctive character, those looking exclusively for great alpine descents may find its offering limited compared to high-altitude resorts.
