Nestled at the foot of the mighty Bischofsmütze and Dachstein mountains, Filzmoos is a charming and family-friendly ski resort in the Salzburg region of Austria. Known for its serene atmosphere, uncrowded slopes, and traditional village charm, it’s a perfect destination for those looking to enjoy winter sports away from the crowds. Whether you’re skiing, snowshoeing, or relaxing in an alpine hut, Filzmoos offers a peaceful, scenic, and authentically Austrian alpine experience.

Filzmoos ski resort

Filzmoos offers around 20 kilometers of well-groomed ski slopes, ideal for families, beginners, and relaxed skiers. The ski area lies between 1,050 and 1,600 meters of elevation and offers consistent snow conditions throughout the season, supported by a reliable snow management system. While it doesn’t aim to compete with large ski circuits, the slopes here are wide, gentle, and uncrowded — perfect for children and novice skiers.

The ski area features 8 lifts, including a modern 6-seater chairlift and several drag lifts that ensure easy access to all parts of the mountain. The Michaela Kirchgasser FIS piste — named after the local ski champion — offers a bit more challenge for advanced skiers. Additionally, a small snowpark and fun slope keep younger skiers and snowboarders entertained.

Filzmoos is also connected to the massive Ski Amadé region, so adventurous skiers can access nearby Flachau or Schladming with a short drive. The village also boasts excellent ski schools, family zones with magic carpets, and childcare options, making it an ideal place for a family ski holiday.

Sustainable development in Filzmoos

Filzmoos takes sustainability seriously. The village has committed to preserving its natural surroundings and reducing emissions. Ski buses and shuttle services minimize car traffic, and local accommodations emphasize eco-friendly practices such as energy-efficient heating and regional sourcing. The resort also avoids overdevelopment, maintaining a close-knit alpine feel that respects the surrounding landscape.

Efforts are also made to protect local wildlife and habitats through responsible tourism practices and seasonal land use management. Hiking and ski routes are designed to avoid disruption to sensitive alpine ecosystems.

Unforgettable experiences in Filzmoos

Filzmoos offers more than just skiing. Take a horse-drawn sleigh ride through snow-covered meadows to the Hofalm, one of the area’s most picturesque alpine huts. Try a guided snowshoe hike under the stars or enjoy night tobogganing on a floodlit track. The village is also home to one of the best-known balloon festivals in the Alps — the annual Balloon Week in January, where colorful hot-air balloons rise against a backdrop of snowy peaks.

In the heart of the village, après-ski is cozy and intimate, with rustic pubs and cafes serving mulled wine and traditional Austrian pastries. Cultural events, such as live folk music and torch-lit ski descents, round out the experience.

Filzmoos in summer

During the warmer months, Filzmoos transforms into a quiet hiking paradise. Dozens of trails start directly from the village and lead to alpine meadows, waterfalls, and panoramic viewpoints. Highlights include the walk to the Hofpürglhütte at the foot of the Dachstein south face, and the circular Bischofsmütze trail, which offers unforgettable views and a real sense of solitude.

Cyclists and mountain bikers will find scenic routes across the rolling hills and forested trails, while families can enjoy petting zoos, themed adventure paths, and alpine lakes. The area also promotes soft tourism, focusing on nature education and regional culinary experiences.
