Angel Fire Resort

USA

In northern New Mexico, nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains – the southernmost branch of the American Rockies – there is a place whose very name hints at the grandeur of the spectacle it offers. It is said that it was the Ute Indians who, marvelling at the fiery colours that paint the sky at dawn and dusk over the Moreno Valley, christened this spot the ‘fire of the angels’, and that is where the name ‘Angel Fire’ came from.

Angel Fire Resort: the mountain in New Mexico that the Ute Indians named after the fire of the angels

A name that has stood the test of time and today stands for one of the most comprehensive mountain resorts in the south-western United States. At an altitude of 8,600 feet, surrounded by snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows and skies of a blue that only the southern Rockies can offer, Angel Fire Resort has been the destination of choice for over five decades for families from Texas, Oklahoma and across the American Southwest seeking the mountains in their purest form.

Founded in 1965 by the Roy Lebus family and opened to the public for skiing in the winter of 1967, Angel Fire has grown from its modest beginnings as a small mountain ski area into a highly versatile four-season resort. Today, its 81 winter slopes share the limelight with the largest bike park in the Rockies, an 18-hole golf course at an altitude of 8,600 feet, zip lines over the Moreno Valley, a mountain lake and a range of accommodation options from apartments right next to the slopes to private homes with panoramic views. Angel Fire is also a member of the Powder Alliance, the alliance of independent resorts that guarantees free days of skiing at more than twenty resorts across the American West.

The ski slopes at Angel Fire Resort

The ski area stretches from 8,600 feet (2,621 m) at the base to 10,677 feet (3,254 m) at the summit, with a vertical drop of 2,077 feet (633 m). Its 81 runs and over 550 acres of skiable terrain cater for all ability levels. The lift system comprises 7 facilities: two high-speed express chairlifts – the Chile Express and the Southwest Flyer – a fixed-speed quad chairlift, three double chairlifts and two Wondercarpets for the beginners’ area. Total capacity: 7,200 skiers per hour.

The three snowparks cater to all types of rider: Liberation Park (summit, advanced: jumps, rails and large fun boxes), Sweet Street (beginners: rollers and gentle features) and Night Rider (mixed features with floodlights for night-time sessions). Angel Fire is the only resort in the area offering night skiing, available every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and on public holidays. The ski area also features glades and ‘hike-to’ sections for those seeking untouched snow.

Angel Fire Resort is committed to sustainable development

The resort is nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, amidst forests of pinyon pine, fir and aspen, and home to wildlife such as moose, deer and eagles. It forms part of the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway, an 84-mile scenic route designated as a route of special interest by the State of New Mexico. Its membership of the Powder Alliance – an alliance of independent resorts outside the major corporate conglomerates – reflects a philosophy of authentic tourism, rooted in the local area and community. Nearby is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, one of New Mexico’s most visited monuments, which adds a historical and human dimension to the destination.
