Canada
On the western shore of the Niagara Escarpment, on the hills overlooking Georgian Bay in Ontario, there is a place where skiing transcends sport to become a way of life. The Alpine Ski Club, founded in 1960 near Collingwood, is one of Canada’s most distinguished private ski clubs.
In 2018, CNN Travel named it one of the nine best private ski resorts in the world: a accolade that sums up what generations of members already know about skiing at Alpine.
Alpine Ski Club: Ontario’s most exclusive private ski club, as recognised by CNN Travel
It is not a conventional resort open to the public. It is a private members’ club where controlled access, Olympic-standard programmes, a 45,000-square-foot clubhouse with views over Georgia Bay, and a community passionate about the mountains create more than just slopes: they forge bonds between people, family traditions, and memories that are passed down from generation to generation.
The Alpine Ski Club’s ski slopes
The course covers 120 acres with a 760-foot (232 m) elevation change, carved into three distinct faces of the Niagara Escarpment, giving the club a variety of terrain that is extraordinary for Ontario. Its 37 runs are arranged progressively: from the beginners’ area with a magic carpet lift—accessible from the clubhouse galleries—to the five double black diamond runs of “The Steeps”, the club’s most challenging terrain. The five lifts include a six-seater express chairlift and three quad chairlifts. Limited membership ensures queue-free slopes even on the busiest weekends.
Alpine is home to Ontario’s newest competition-grade half-pipe, set within a 6.5-acre terrain park featuring over two dozen features. This half-pipe has been the training ground for at least three athletes and coaches who have competed in the Olympic Games under the Canadian flag.
The Alpine Ski Club is committed to sustainable development
The club is situated on the Niagara Escarpment, designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The club’s philosophy is rooted in a clear conviction: only by caring for the natural environment that makes it unique can it endure for generations. This translates into energy-efficient practices, responsible water management for snowmaking, tree restoration and the protection of biodiversity across the 384-acre site. The limited membership model is also, indirectly, a commitment to sustainability: fewer users means less wear and tear on the natural landscape.
Unforgettable experiences at the Alpine Ski Club
With over 150 certified instructors and coaches, the Alpine training programme is one of the most comprehensive in Ontario, offering private and semi-private lessons as well as competitive programmes for all ages in alpine skiing, snowboarding and freestyle. Miles of marked snowshoe trails and an outdoor ice rink round off the offering for those looking for something different from the slopes. Après-ski catering by Men with Knives — one of the most award-winning establishments in South Georgian Bay — and a social calendar featuring events for children, teenagers and families make winter an unrivalled community experience. The Ski Across programme allows members to ski every Sunday at the neighbouring Craigleith Ski Club, expanding the available terrain at no extra cost.
Where to stay at the Alpine Ski Club
The club does not have its own accommodation, but its proximity to Collingwood and the Blue Mountains—a popular weekend destination in Ontario—means there is a wide range of boutique hotels, charming B&Bs, spa resorts and holiday cottages just a few minutes’ drive from the slopes. Members enjoy exclusive rates at local establishments as part of their membership benefits.
The Alpine Ski Club in summer
The 45,000-square-foot clubhouse, with panoramic views over Georgian Bay and the Escarpment, is South Georgian Bay’s premier event venue (2023 award). It hosts weddings for up to 700 guests, corporate events, galas and fundraisers from spring to autumn. The club’s trails also remain open for hiking and mountain biking. The region offers kayaking and paddleboarding on Georgian Bay, cycling routes along the Georgian Trail, and golf at several courses in the area.
Skiing at the Alpine Ski Club: the season’s highlights
Limited membership, no queues on the slopes, Ontario’s only competition-standard half-pipe, over 150 instructors, recognised by CNN Travel as one of the world’s top nine resorts, cuisine from Men with Knives, and over 60 years of Alpine history. Skiing at Alpine isn’t just about choosing a slope: it’s about choosing to be part of something.
