Many hotels are built in spring areas and their sewage systems are diverted without proper treatment to the Bahía Redonda on Lago Argentino, where technicians from the Calafate Natural Association have detected the presence of bacteria from faecal matter.

There are also plans to build a dam to maintain the water level in the bay all year round and turn it into a skating rink, regardless of the ups and downs caused by snowmelt, which would prevent thousands of birds from nesting and breeding in the wetland that forms on the shores of the bay during low water. Tourism developments and policies are making the ecosystem landscape increasingly complex.
