Les Sybelles
France | Región: Northern Alps

The Sybelles ski area was created in 1990 by linking the resorts of Le Corbier, La Toussuire, Saint Sorlin, Saint Jean d’Arves, and Colomban des Villards. The aim of Les Sybelles is to promote the tourist sites of Maurienne and create a large connected ski area.

It is located in the heart of Savoie, in Maurienne. Together, they offer 310 kilometers of slopes, making it the largest resort in the Maurienne valley and one of the five largest in France.

The ski slopes of Les Sybelles

The Sybelles ski area, located in the heart of Savoie, is one of the largest connected ski areas in France. With 310 kilometers of slopes linking six resorts—La Toussuire, Le Corbier, Saint-Sorlin-d’Arves, Saint-Jean-d’Arves, Les Bottières, and Saint-Colomban-des-Villards—it offers a generous alpine territory that combines modernity, tradition, and panoramic views stretching as far as the eye can see. Between its base, at an altitude of around 1,100 meters, and the summit of L’Ouillon, at 2,620 meters, Les Sybelles is a privileged playground for both beginner skiers and experienced enthusiasts looking for long crossings and varied descents.

For intermediate skiers, who make up the core of the resort’s clientele, certain slopes have become iconic. Among them, the descent from Ouillon to Saint-Colomban stands out as a benchmark. Almost eight kilometers long with a vertical drop of around 1,300 meters, it perfectly illustrates the spirit of Les Sybelles: wide, sun-drenched slopes, a smooth route, and the exhilarating sensation of gliding from one valley to another without interruption. In the same vein, the route linking Les Perrons to Saint-Sorlin-d’Arves is one of the area’s must-do runs. Over six kilometers long with an elevation drop of more than 1,000 meters, this run offers spectacular views of the Aiguilles d’Arves, one of the most iconic mountain ranges in the French Alps. These two descents embody the pleasure of panoramic, accessible, and continuous skiing, typical of the Sybelles identity.

More experienced skiers will also find something to satisfy them. In Saint-Sorlin-d’Arves, the Balme slope seduces with its average gradient of 35%, offering a sporty and sustained profile. In the higher altitude areas, certain natural couloirs—known as the Bear Couloirs or Toussuire Couloirs—offer great opportunities for freeriding, provided, of course, that the snow and safety conditions are right. While not rivalling the most extreme areas of the Alps, Les Sybelles nevertheless offers a varied topography, ideal for challenging and secluded skiing.

The overall profile of the area is clearly family-oriented. Of the more than 300 kilometers of slopes, the majority are blue and red runs, while black runs total barely 20 kilometers. This distribution makes it an ideal place to progress at your own pace, with large areas for beginners at Le Corbier, Les Bottières, and Saint-Colomban, and carefully designed play areas. The Ouillon snowpark, boardercross courses, and fun zones contribute to the friendly and accessible atmosphere that characterizes the resort.

But beyond skiing, Les Sybelles also charms with its spectacular views. From the high slopes of Saint-Sorlin, the panorama of the Aiguilles d’Arves is simply magnificent, especially at sunset, when the peaks are bathed in shades of pink. The favorable exposure and generous light guarantee pleasant, sunny days, even in the middle of winter.

Ultimately, Les Sybelles offers a rare combination of space, diversity, and gentleness. This human-scale resort, without sacrificing alpine grandeur, charms visitors with its balance of family-friendly and technical trails, its preserved authenticity, and its warm atmosphere. It is a place where you can ski in freedom, facing some of the most beautiful panoramas in Savoie.
