History of the Le Corbier ski resort

Created from scratch in the city of Villarembert in the 1960,s, the Corbier resort was born out of a simple desire; to boost the economic development in the region. Driven by the mayor, state workers, residents, and businesses, the resort’s original approach was drawn up on terrain trying to maximize the mountain.

The first works began in 1966: creation of a road and tracks, construction of infrastructure and ski lifts, as well as sewerage and electricity network. Important mention to the tourist office, “Le Tripode”, in a pyramid shape that is still incredible today. The resort was built in a short period of time and opened on December 31 1967; Ski and winter sports personalities of the time attended this inauguration.

In the early 2000,s, the Corbier resort went one step further in its desire to offer excellent skiing and joined forces with five other resorts: La Toussuire, Saint-Sorlin-d’Arves, Saint-Jean-d’Arves, Saint-Colomban-des-Villards and Les Bottières, to form the Sybelles ski domain. This initiative arises from a former baker, majority shareholder of the ski lift company, who was aspiring to a large ski area; This would connect the six resorts at the top of the Ouillon, at 2431 meters above sea level. On December 13 2003 the resort became part of the Sybelles domain, the largest in Maurienne, with 310 km of slopes and culminating at 2620 meters above sea level.

Skiing in Le Corbier: the resort’s strengths

Located in the Maurienne valley in Savoie, Le Corbier is part of the large Les Sybelles ski area, the fourth largest in France with over 310 kilometers of interconnected slopes. Alongside neighboring resorts such as La Toussuire, Saint-Sorlin-d’Arves, and Saint-Jean-d’Arves, it offers direct access to a vast alpine playground with exceptional views of the Aiguilles d’Arves, the symbol of the valley. Its location at an altitude of 1,550 meters guarantees an excellent balance between altitude, snow, and comfort.

A 100% pedestrian-friendly and safe resort

One of the great attractions of Le Corbier is its completely pedestrian-friendly concept. The heart of the village is designed for visitors to get around without cars, with accommodation, shops, and restaurants at the foot of the slopes. This layout—unusual in the Alps—reinforces the safety, comfort, and family spirit that defines the resort. From anywhere in the center, skiers can access the lifts directly, making for a smooth and relaxed experience.

A modern resort with a family spirit

Le Corbier has positioned itself as a modern and functional resort, particularly geared towards families and beginners. Its vertical urban planning—with buildings designed to maximize direct access to the slopes—was pioneering in the 1970s and remains relevant today thanks to its efficiency. The ski schools (ESF and ESI), kids’ clubs, and spacious, safe learning areas ensure a comfortable progression for children and beginners.

Skiing for all levels

The domain offers slopes for all profiles, from wide blue runs ideal for carving to red and black descents that challenge the most experienced skiers. Connections to La Toussuire and Saint-Sorlin-d’Arves are quick and smooth, allowing you to enjoy long days without repeating the same route. In addition, the average altitude and orientation of the slopes ensure excellent snow quality for much of the season.

Innovation, comfort, and sustainability

Le Corbier is actively involved in the modernization policy of the Les Sybelles ski area. Lifts have been renovated to increase energy efficiency, snowmaking systems have been optimized, and infrastructure accessible to people with reduced mobility has been developed. The resort also promotes an ecological transition model with energy-saving measures, electric mobility, and responsible water management, in line with the commitments of the Savoyard massif.

Activities for all seasons

Beyond skiing, Le Corbier has established itself as a four-season mountain destination. In summer, the resort is transformed into an ideal space for hiking, cycling, and trail running. It is part of the Tour de France route, and its mountainous surroundings offer a network of scenic routes to the Col de la Croix de Fer or the Aiguilles d’Arves. Wellness activities, heated swimming pools, and family leisure areas are also available.

Hospitality and services

The resort has a comprehensive range of hotels and apartments, with accommodation at the foot of the slopes, local shops, Savoyard restaurants, and wellness services. The atmosphere is lively but never crowded, with family events, concerts, and après-ski activities that enliven the evenings without detracting from the serenity of a mountain resort.

Accessibility and connections

Le Corbier is 17 km from Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, with easy access via the A43 motorway and the Lyon–Turin TGV line. This proximity makes it one of the most accessible destinations in the Maurienne valley, both for French and international visitors.

Limitations to consider

As in most mid-altitude resorts, snow conditions can vary at the end of the season. However, the density of ski lifts, the size of the ski area, and the coverage of artificial snow guarantee a complete skiing experience even in mild winters.

An efficient, family-friendly, and connected resort

Le Corbier represents the perfect balance between modernity, functionality, and a family atmosphere. Its pedestrian-friendly nature, direct access to Les Sybelles, and commitment to sustainable development make it one of the most intelligent, comfortable, and people-friendly resorts in the French Alps.
