In the 20th century, Andermatt became a Swiss military stronghold. In 1886, the army established a strategic base there, building bunkers and barracks in the surrounding mountains. During the Second World War, it served as the headquarters of the Swiss army, with more than 80,000 soldiers stationed in the region. Sustainable development of the Andermatt ski resort

The future lies in sustainable tourism. At the meeting of the Swiss Tourism Federation (STV), professors from the University of St. Gallen defended the Andermatt megaproject. In their opinion, the project represents a great opportunity for Switzerland.

Thomas Bieger, Christian Laesser and Pietro Beritelli, from the University of St. Gallen, were invited to the CST meeting to discuss the future of the sector and sustainable development, and argued that projects on the scale of Andermatt are an advantage for the development of tourism in Switzerland.

Environmental experts considered that the luxury ‘mega-resort’ project of Egyptian billionaire Samih Sawiris fulfilled the legal conditions.

The president of the FST, Franz Steinegger, linked the positive development of the sector to the political and economic opening up to the outside world and to the bilateral agreements with the European Union (EU). He called on those responsible for the sector not to favour unilateral short-term interests, but to promote dialogue between society, the economy and environmentalists.
