Alta

Alta ski resort is located in Utah, USA. It has a really good lift infrastructure and is known for its extremely challenging terrain, but there is also an area for beginners and intermediate levels. The resort is linked to Snowbird via the Sugarloaf chairlift or a free shuttle bus. If you pay the extra money for a combined Alta/Snowbird lift ticket you get even more terrain. Together the resorts provide 26 lifts and 1,902 hectares (4,700 acres) of terrain, making it one of the largest ski areas in the US. The two resorts together make it one of the largest ski areas in the USA.

Alta Ski Resort

This ski resort benefits from the highest quality and most prolific snowfall in all of North America. It is one of the best places in the world for skiing, and only for skiing, as it is one of the three resorts in the world where snowboarding is strictly prohibited. It is named after the town of Alta in Salt Lake County.
Known for its powder skiing and its rejection of snowboarding, this is a great resort. Especially since its 2002 merger with Snowbird, the snow is fantastic and the slopes are ideal for advanced skiers.

Alta ski resort activities

As you’ve already seen, the ski resort is notorious for not allowing snowboarding in the vicinity. But that’s not a problem – the resort offers other activities, such as snowshoeing in search of animal tracks while surrounded by some of Utah’s most beautiful mountains. You can also join the expert birders this winter on skis in search of our feathered friends that call Alta home. You can also take the Utah Ski Interconnect Tour, giving an advanced skier the opportunity to experience the magnificent beauty and incredible off-piste terrain of the Wasatch Range through up to six resorts in one day.

Sustainable development of the Alta ski resort

The Alta Environmental Centre was created in 2008 to guide the ski area’s sustainability efforts and care for the natural environment in which we operate.

Along with internal efforts, they ask where, when and how they can be part of broader efforts for the common good. As stewards of their privately owned and Forest Service-permitted lands,

their duty is to ensure that Alta Station addresses the challenges posed by increased visitation, development, and growth.

The day-to-day work of the Alta Environmental Center includes three main duties: pursue sustainability internally for Alta Ski Area through energy, water, land and business conservation (the resort has 98 solar panels). Act as a resource for its community in an effort to promote more sustainability initiatives through partnerships and stewardship. And encourage environmental education and research through internal and third party collaboration.

Unforgettable experiences in Alta

Take a helicopter ride and escape the crowds for a unique experience in the mountains of Utah.

Located in the heart of the expansive Wasatch and Uinta Mountains, Powderbird is the only outfitter in Utah that has permission to heliski on U.S. Forest Service land and access more terrain than all the ski resorts combined. The public and private terrain Powderbird’s exclusive permission to operate on totals over 68,000 skiable acres! Enjoy heliskiing at Wasatch —it’s not to be missed!

Alta Mountain Resort in summer

At the resort, summers are quiet, and you can go hiking and trekking on a variety of trails through Utah’s forests. Or, if you prefer, you can ride the same trails on a mountain bike for a faster pace. Alternatively, if you feel like spending a night in the wilderness, you can camp and enjoy the sunset. The season is also perfect for planting trees and plants as part of the resort’s environmental sustainability programme.
