In the heart of the Ruhr region, Germany’s industrial heartland par excellence, lies one of European skiing’s best-kept secrets: the Alpincenter Bottrop, the world’s longest indoor ski slope. Stretching 640 metres in length and built on the former Halde Prosperstraße mining slag heap, this monumental complex offers a completely different way to experience the snow: just an hour from Düsseldorf, Dortmund or Cologne, millions of people have access to skiing 365 days a year, regardless of the weather or the season.
The Alpincenter was born out of the vision of Marc Girardelli, four-time world champion and five-time winner of the Alpine Skiing World Cup, who opened it on 7 January 2001 with an investment of 50 million euros. In 2004, the Van der Valk Group took over. Today it is much more than just a snow slope: skydiving, paintball, high-altitude climbing, alpine dining and après-ski until 2 am make up a leisure offering that no other indoor venue can match.
The ski slopes at Alpincenter Bottrop
Inside a 150,000 m³ dome maintained at a constant -2 °C, the 640-metre main run features something unique among snow domes worldwide: a turn right in the middle of the descent, adding real technical variety. The vertical drop exceeds 80 metres, with gradients of up to 24%. The beginners’ slope has its own ski lift, and the fun park with kickers, rails and boxes caters to freestylers and snowboarders. Three lifts manage the flow without queues. The snowmaking system — supported by 130 km of pipes containing 55,000 litres of biodegradable heat transfer fluid — produces snow at the top and distributes it by gravity down to the base.
The Alpincenter Bottrop is committed to sustainable development
The cooling system uses Temper -25 fluid: non-toxic, environmentally inert and readily biodegradable. Its low viscosity allows for smaller pipes and pumps than those required for conventional glycol, reducing the energy costs of installation and operation. Furthermore, the Alpincenter was built on the Halde Prosperstraße, a former mining spoil tip converted into a tourist attraction: one of the most striking examples of post-industrial urban regeneration in the Ruhr region.
Unforgettable experiences at Alpincenter Bottrop
The ski and snowboard school has over 100 qualified instructors. Courses for complete beginners start every day, with groups of up to 9 people and sessions lasting 2 or 4 hours. Indoor Skydiving Bottrop, right next to the slope and the only professional flight tunnel in North Rhine-Westphalia, welcomes children from the age of 4. Each session includes instruction, equipment and a flight certificate. The paintball field (800 m²) and the high ropes course (10 stations at 10 m with self-belay) round off the adrenaline-fuelled activities. Two rustic Alpine restaurants, a terrace overlooking the Ruhr region and a beer garden round off the experience with après-ski that runs until 2 am at weekends. The complex is also a leading venue for corporate events: skiing + team building + meeting rooms in one of the most unique settings in central Europe.
Where to stay at Alpincenter Bottrop
The Van der Valk Hotel Gladbeck (4★), just 7 km away, is the most comprehensive option: its all-inclusive packages include accommodation with breakfast, a ski pass with full equipment hire, and unlimited drinks on the slopes. The Van der Valk Hotel Moers (4★), 35 km away, extends the offer for those combining their visit with exploring the Rhine region. Both establishments offer transport and group rates negotiated directly with the resort’s sales team.
The Alpincenter Bottrop in summer
The ski slope remains open 365 days a year, with the same extensive opening hours. In summer, the outdoor area offers its own attractions: the summer toboggan run—the first and only one of its kind in the Ruhr region—winds its way down the slopes of the Halde for 740 metres in a spiral, with a vertical drop of over 80 metres. The climbing garden and paintball are open during the summer season. And the contrast of skiing at -2 °C and then stepping out onto a sunny terrace at 30 °C is an experience that few facilities in the world can offer. The Cool Summer Deal turns this contrast into a unique selling point for tourists.
