Norway
At first glance, Strandafjellet could almost go unnoticed on the European skiing scene. With its 25 kilometres of slopes and six ski lifts, the resort has neither the scale of the major Alpine ski areas nor the infrastructure of the big international destinations. Yet, for many Norwegian skiers, Stranda represents something far more precious: the very essence of skiing in Norway.
Located in the Sunnmøre region, around two hours from Ålesund, the resort overlooks the Storfjord. Here, the mountains do not stop at the valleys: they literally plunge into the sea. This spectacular landscape has shaped Stranda’s identity since it opened in 1957. When conditions are right, it is even possible to ski from the peaks right down to the edge of the fjord, a feature that is extremely rare in Europe.
A stunning location in the heart of the Sunnmøre Alps
To understand Stranda, you first need to understand Sunnmøre. This mountainous region on Norway’s west coast is regarded as one of the most beautiful alpine landscapes in Scandinavia. Unlike Norway’s inland mountain ranges, the mountains here are directly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean.
The result: heavy rainfall; generally very generous snowfall; landscapes combining the sea, fjords and snow-capped peaks; a winter season particularly popular with powder snow enthusiasts.
From the upper reaches of Roaldshorn (1,230 m), the views stretch across the Storfjord, the mountains of Sunnmøre and the valleys leading down to the Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The ski area: compact but remarkably efficient
The Strandafjellet ski area stretches from 430 to 1,230 metres above sea level and offers a vertical drop of nearly 800 metres, which is remarkable by Norwegian standards. Served by several modern ski lifts, it offers around twenty runs suitable for all levels, from beginner-friendly areas to steeper runs favoured by experienced skiers.
One of Stranda’s distinctive features is its natural terrain. Unlike many resorts where the slopes have significantly altered the mountain’s shape, the runs here follow the original topography of the slopes. The result is a particularly smooth and authentic skiing experience, with long runs offering unobstructed views of the fjords and surrounding peaks.
The highest parts of the area lead to panoramic ridges from which you can see the Storfjord, the mountains of Sunnmøre and, on a clear day, the peaks surrounding the famous Geirangerfjord. Few resorts in Europe can boast such a striking contrast between coastal scenery and alpine landscapes.

Stranda is also renowned far beyond its marked slopes. For several decades, the resort has been one of the top destinations for freeriding in Norway. The abundant snowfall brought in from the Atlantic, the variety of aspects and the quality of the natural terrain attract numerous powder enthusiasts every winter. For many Norwegians, Strandafjellet is even considered one of the country’s leading destinations for off-piste skiing.
This reputation is also down to the resort’s close proximity to some of the country’s most beautiful ski touring routes. The peaks surrounding the resort offer the chance to explore an exceptional environment where descents can sometimes extend all the way down to the fjord. This unique experience, often referred to as ‘fjord skiing’, is one of Stranda’s most iconic features.
One of Scandinavia’s top freeride destinations
If Stranda now attracts visitors from all over Norway and an increasing number of international skiers, it is primarily thanks to its reputation in the world of freeriding. For several decades, Strandafjellet has been regarded as one of the country’s best powder spots, benefiting from exceptional snow cover due to the direct influence of the Atlantic Ocean.
The surrounding terrain offers a particularly varied landscape, alternating between wide, open valleys, steep slopes, natural glens and wooded areas, allowing you to ski even when visibility is poor. Unlike many freeride destinations that have become very busy, Stranda retains an authentic atmosphere where you can still enjoy vast, untouched expanses after a snowfall.
One of Strandafjellet’s main attractions is its quick access to off-piste areas. From the ski lifts, experienced skiers can access numerous routes offering spectacular descents, with the waters of the Storfjord and the rugged peaks of Sunnmøre as a backdrop. This combination of alpine terrain, maritime snow conditions and fjord landscapes is virtually unique in Europe.
The resort is also an ideal base for exploring the mountains of Sunnmøre, a region renowned worldwide among ski touring enthusiasts. Every spring, as the days grow longer, many enthusiasts come to explore the surrounding peaks to enjoy the iconic ‘fjord skiing’ experience, which involves climbing a mountain and then skiing down to the seashore.
