Saint Francois Longchamp - ILOVESKI®
Secteur La Lauzière - Saint Francois Longchamp - ILOVESKI®

Saint François Longchamp is a ski resort located in the Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is nestled between the Maurienne and Tarentaise valleys, at an altitude ranging from 1,450 to 2,550 metres, offering an exceptional setting in the heart of the French Northern Alps.

One of the major attractions of Saint François Longchamp is its integration into the Grand Domaine, a vast ski area that connects it directly to the neighbouring resort of Valmorel. This extensive area covers approximately 165 km of slopes, divided between the two resorts, with 95 km on the Valmorel side and 70 km for Saint François Longchamp.

Located at the foot of the Col de la Madeleine, a famous stage of the Tour de France, it enjoys a spectacular panorama of the Belledonne and Oisans mountains and, on clear days, the legendary Mont Blanc. With its fresh air, plenty of sunshine and abundant snow in winter, Saint François Longchamp offers the perfect balance between altitude, accessibility and authentic Alpine charm.

History of the Saint François Longchamp ski resort

The history of Saint François Longchamp is one of gradual evolution, born out of necessity and driven by the determination of its inhabitants. Before 1843, the area was not yet a commune: it belonged to Montgellafrey, a neighbouring village that was difficult to reach in winter. To overcome their isolation, the hamlets of Planet and Covatières obtained the creation of a new parish dedicated to Saint François de Sales.

The commune of Saint François sur Bugeon was officially created in 1901 and became Saint François Longchamp in 1969, reflecting the development of tourism in the Longchamp region that began in the 1950s. The first ski lift, installed in 1936 thanks to Charles Teule, marked the beginning of an ascent towards modernity.

The 1950s to 1980s were decisive: the resort acquired modern ski lifts, mainly supplied by the POMA company, and equipped itself to welcome an ever-increasing number of visitors. In 1983, the creation of the Grand Domaine marked a major turning point, linking Saint François Longchamp to Valmorel and forming a vast and attractive ski area.

Always on the move, the resort inaugurated its balneotherapy centre in 2010, modernised its lifts (such as the Lune Bleue, which became a chairlift) and invested in four-season facilities. Today, Saint François Longchamp combines authenticity, innovation and a warm welcome, remaining faithful to the pioneering spirit of its origins.

The Saint François Longchamp ski area

The Saint François Longchamp ski area covers 70 km of slopes perfectly integrated into a natural cirque-shaped landscape. This unique geographical configuration makes it easy to find your way around, allowing skiers, especially families with children, to easily find their way back to the slopes.

The area is designed to satisfy all levels of ability, with a balanced distribution of green, blue, red and black runs. Beginners and experienced skiers alike can progress at their own pace in a safe and well-structured environment.

At altitude, several relaxation and dining areas allow you to take a break and enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the Belledonne, Lauzière and Mont Blanc mountains. A ski area on a human scale, but rich in thrills and breathtaking views.

An ideal destination for families

Saint François Longchamp is an ideal destination for families with children, thanks to its fun slopes specially designed for the youngest skiers. Among these, Opoualand is a real paradise for children, where they can discover skiing while having fun on themed trails populated by colourful characters. La Tanière de Boris, another fun slope, invites young skiers to set off on an adventure in a world inspired by a friendly bear, Boris, who accompanies them through games and challenges adapted to their level.

Apart from skiing, Saint François Longchamp offers a multitude of other activities for families. La Comète, the toboggan run, promises thrilling descents for young and old alike, guaranteeing laughter and thrills. For those who want to try something different, activities such as fat biking, dog sledding, segway rides, snowshoeing and ski touring are available, allowing you to discover the snow-covered landscapes in an original and fun way. These activities offer an alternative to skiing and allow the whole family to enjoy the mountains at their own pace.

Skiing in the ‘Grand Domaine’

With 165 km of slopes spread across the two resorts, this ski area stands out for its diversity. It includes 48 ski lifts, providing easy access to a wide variety of slopes suitable for all levels, from beginners to experts. These areas offer a variety of activities, adding a fun dimension to the skiing experience. They allow families to share moments of fun together, while catering to the desires of skiers of all ages and levels. Sustainable development initiatives

Saint François Longchamp takes sustainable development seriously and has implemented several initiatives to minimise its impact on the environment. One of the main initiatives is the use of renewable energy in the resort’s facilities. Charging stations for electric vehicles and clean energy heating systems are just a few examples of how the resort is reducing its carbon footprint.

Flocon Vert label

Since 2022, Saint François Longchamp has also been awarded the Flocon Vert label, a certification created in 2013 by the Mountain Riders association. This label promotes, guarantees and validates the commitment of mountain tourist destinations to the transition to sustainability. To obtain this distinction, territories must meet 20 criteria in four key areas of sustainable development: local economy, social and cultural aspects, governance and destination, and environment and natural resources.

In addition, the resort is actively involved in natural environment conservation programmes. Protected areas have been created to preserve local flora and fauna, and ongoing efforts are being made to minimise soil erosion and the impact of the ski slopes. Visitors are encouraged to participate in sustainable practices, such as recycling and using public transport, in order to contribute to the conservation of the alpine environment.

Famille Plus certification

Saint François Longchamp is proudly certified Famille Plus, a distinction that demonstrates the resort’s commitment to welcoming families and providing them with excellent services. This national certification guarantees that the resort meets strict criteria to ensure an enjoyable stay for families, taking into account the specific needs of children and parents.

Goupy, the Fox Mascot of Saint François Longchamp

At the heart of this family atmosphere, Goupy, the resort’s fox mascot, plays a central role. Goupy is much more than just a mascot; he is a companion for children throughout their stay. Living in the mountains of Saint François Longchamp, Goupy actively participates in various activities and events organised for the youngest visitors, making their mountain experience even more memorable.

Children can meet Goupy at shows, fun activities and even specially adapted ski sessions, where the mascot’s presence adds a touch of magic and joy. Goupy thus helps to create a warm and welcoming environment, perfectly in line with the values promoted by the Famille Plus certification.

What to do in Saint François Longchamp in summer?

Saint François Longchamp is not limited to winter activities: the resort offers a wide range of summer options to entertain and relax all visitors. The famous Comète rail slide, popular with adrenaline junkies, allows you to hurtle down the slopes while enjoying an exceptional panoramic view of the surrounding mountains. Cyclists, whether beginners or experienced, can practise their skills on the pumptrack, a circuit specially designed to perfect their technique and take on challenges.

Electric mountain biking also opens up new possibilities for exploring the alpine trails without excessive effort. Meanwhile, the obstacle course offers thrills and challenges for the more daring. For cycling enthusiasts, the legendary climbs of the Tour de France, including the famous Col de la Madeleine and Col du Chaussy, are an unmissable sporting challenge, rewarded by breathtaking panoramic views.

Nature lovers and hikers will find a multitude of routes to discover the alpine landscapes in all their splendour. We particularly recommend the ascent of the Cheval Noir (2,832 m), which leads to magnificent mountain lakes such as the Lac Bleu and the Lac Blanc, as well as the Lac de la Grande Léchère in the Montgellafrey area, and the Lac du Loup near Montaimont.

Don’t miss the balneotherapy centre, a haven of well-being and relaxation in the heart of the mountains. Named Balnéo, the centre covers more than 2,500 m² and offers a wide range of facilities: balneotherapy pools, treatment rooms, sauna, hammam, jacuzzi and fitness room. It is the ideal place to recover after a day of physical activity or simply to enjoy a moment of tranquillity and self-care.
