The Piau Engaly ski resort is committed to sustainable development
Piau-Engaly is firmly committed to sustainable development, integrating ecological initiatives into all of its services. The resort is entirely pedestrianised, allowing visitors to park their vehicles on arrival and get around easily thanks to free shuttle buses
serving the various services in the centre of the resort. This configuration helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provides a safer and more pleasant environment for pedestrians.
Piau-Engaly is also committed to a policy of corporate social responsibility (CSR), optimising energy management and choosing local partners who share this sustainable vision. For example, the resort offers care products from responsible suppliers in its balneotherapy centre, illustrating its commitment to environmentally friendly practices.

Skiing in Piau-Engaly: the resort’s strong points
Located at the end of the Aure Valley, very close to the Spanish border (via the Aragnouet-Bielsa tunnel), Piau-Engalyclaims its position as the highest resort in the French Pyrenees, with areas reaching up to 2,600 m in altitude. This high altitude helps to preserve natural snow even in seasons with low precipitation.
Ski area, slopes, and lifts
- Piau-Engaly offers approximately 33 km of skiable slopes spread across different levels: green, blue, red, and black runs.
- In terms of elevation, the resort extends between 1,765 m and 2,528 m, providing a vertical drop of more than 760 meters for continuous descents.
- The lift infrastructure consists of nine mechanical installations, including chairlifts and surface lifts.
- Although the terrain is not huge, Piau-Engaly offers variety: beginner skiers have wide, gentle slopes to progress on, while intermediate skiers have a good number of medium slopes, and more experienced skiers can seek out more technical slopes and freeride areas on the edges of the domain.
Snow, guarantee, and atmosphere
One of its great assets is its snow guarantee thanks to its altitude and favorable orientation, making it a reliable option even in difficult seasons. The resort has even been described as “snow-sure” in various mountain resort reviews.
The atmosphere in Piau-Engaly is intimate and relaxed. Being smaller than the large Alpine resorts, it is less crowded, which is a bonus for those seeking peace and quiet on the slopes.
In addition, much of the village is organized in a ski-in/ski-out format, making it easy to access the slopes directly from your accommodation. The service center (shops, rentals, restaurants) is grouped together in a semi-underground complex in the heart of the resort, at an altitude of around 1,860 m, which helps to integrate the infrastructure into the landscape and reduces travel distances.
Complementary leisure activities and events
Piau-Engaly is not limited to downhill skiing: it has a snowpark with modules, boardercross, and play areas for those who want to alternate between different styles of skiing. It also offers activities such as snowshoeing, sledding, fat biking on snow, and winter hiking for those who want to vary their experience. On the competitive and festive side, every year it hosts the famous Derby des Pyrénées, a timed downhill race from the highest point to the resort’s snow front.
Useful tips for enjoying Piau-Engaly
- Starting at the highest points at the beginning of the day guarantees you’ll enjoy the freshest snow and even be able to make your own tracks.
- If snow conditions are variable, head for the central slopes, which are better exposed and well maintained.
- Take advantage of direct access from your accommodation (ski-in/ski-out) to start skiing without wasting any time.
- Don’t rule out staying in villages in the valley (Aragnouet or even on the Spanish side) if you’re looking for a wider range of accommodation, as Piau has a relatively limited offer.
- If you are interested in a variety of activities, book a day of leisure (snowshoeing, fat biking, guided excursion) to take a break from pure skiing.
