Skiing in Champoluc: the highlights of the resort that is the gateway to Monterosa Ski

Champoluc is located at an altitude of 1,570 meters in the Ayas Valley (Aosta Valley) and is the main gateway to Monterosa Ski, an international ski area that links Champoluc, Gressoney-La-Trinité, and Alagna Valsesia.

With over 180 kilometers of connected slopes and panoramic views reaching 4,000 meters, Champoluc offers one of the most complete skiing experiences in Italy.

Surrounded by the Monte Rosa massif, the resort combines the vastness of the central Alps with the intimate charm of an authentic mountain village.

A vast, high-altitude ski area

From the center of Champoluc, the Crest cable car provides access to the upper part of the domain in just a few minutes. The altitudes range from 1,570 to 2,980 meters, with long, well-oriented slopes and exceptional snow quality. The entire domain offers 180 km of slopes and 37 lifts, connecting the valleys of Ayas, Gressoney, and Valsesia.

This interconnection allows for epic days, crossing three valleys in a single day, with views of Monte Rosa and the Indren glacier.

Balance between technique and enjoyment

The slopes of Champoluc are wide, varied, and very well maintained.

The Crest sector is ideal for beginners and families, while Frachey and Bettaforca offer more technical and faster descents. Advanced skiers will find the route to Alagna a challenging and scenic experience.

Freeriding and high mountains

Freeriding is part of Champoluc’s DNA. The Indren Glacier area, at almost 3,300 meters, is one of the great temples of off-piste skiing in Italy. The open slopes, powder snow, and north-facing orientation create ideal conditions for skiing in virgin snow, always with a guide and safety equipment. Freeriding in Monterosa Ski is distinguished by its breadth and accessibility: from Champoluc, you can access high-level itineraries without the need for a helicopter.

An authentic and welcoming village

Champoluc retains the character of a lively and elegant Valdostan village. Its center combines wooden chalets, charming hotels, trattorias, and boutiques. Unlike many Alpine resorts, local life here does not disappear when the snow falls: hospitality has deep roots. Après-ski is lively, but without excess: sunny terraces, bars serving local wine, and open-air concerts. All this against the backdrop of Monte Rosa and the sound of the Evançon river.

Nature and sustainability

Champoluc is part of the Ayas Valley, one of the greenest in the Aosta Valley.

Monterosa Ski’s environmental commitment includes renewable energy for the ski lifts, rational water management, and the promotion of public transport. The resort’s goal is to achieve climate neutrality by 2035, following in the footsteps of other Italian resorts that are pioneers in sustainability. The balance between sport and respect for the environment is one of the hallmarks of the valley.

Aosta Valley cuisine and mountain refuges

The cuisine in Champoluc reflects the tradition of the Aosta Valley: hearty, flavorful, and made with local products. High-altitude mountain huts serve dishes such as polenta concia, carbonada, and cheese platters with Fontina DOP. Local wine, especially Torrette Superiore, accompanies every meal against a picture-postcard backdrop. Mountain huts such as L’Aroula, Crest, and Colle Bettaforca are renowned both for their cuisine and their authentic alpine atmosphere.
