Transferred to the commune of Morzine, the mountain pastures took the name ‘Rovorée’. Over time, the pronunciation and name of this territory evolved into ‘Avorée’, then ‘Avoréaz’ to finally become the name of Avoriaz (the ‘z’ is not pronounced) as we know it today. The Morzine ski resort is committed to sustainable development

The Morzine-Avoriaz ski resort has recently equipped itself with new, planet-friendly snow groomers. The new machines run on the eco-polar GTL fuel, which is biodegradable and non-toxic. They are silent and consume less fuel. The machines will be equipped with the Snowsat system (a GPS-based control tool installed on the snow groomers).

The instrument allows the snow height to be measured with almost 100% accuracy. The data is visible to the driver of the snow groomer and transmitted to the server in real time. The data serves as a basis for better distribution of natural snow quantities and for producing only the bare minimum of artificial snow. The Snowsar system will also be able to report the energy consumption of the machines.

It is a small and apparently easy machine to ride. No level is required to participate in this activity, but supervision is necessary for younger children.

Skiing in Morzine: the resort’s highlights

Located in the heart of the Portes du Soleil ski area, Morzine is a privileged gateway to one of the largest ski areas in the Alps. With over 580 km of interconnected slopes and nearly 164 ski lifts linking resorts in France and Switzerland, Morzine allows skiers to explore multiple valleys without having to change their ski pass.

Within its local area, Morzine and its neighbor Les Gets offer approximately 120 km of slopes and 48 lifts for direct use, providing an excellent base for full days of skiing without the need for long transfers. Thanks to this infrastructure, skiers can enjoy varied routes that include panoramic descents, wooded slopes, and technical connections to areas such as Avoriaz.

One of Morzine’s great attractions is its versatility for different levels. Intermediate skiers will find ideal routes for progressing: for example, the Piste B in the Pleney area is a gentle, wooded descent that serves as a warm-up before tackling more demanding itineraries. Those with a higher level can head to areas such as Le Linga, a technical red run that descends towards Villapeyron from Combes, or tackle steep slopes such as the Le Crôt descent, which in some sections exceeds 1,000 m of vertical drop from the high altitudes. For freeride enthusiasts, Morzine offers less-traveled and off-piste areas on the outskirts of the Avoriaz domain—although always with caution and local knowledge.

Another strong point is the snow and weather. Although Morzine is located at an altitude of around 1,000 m, its geographical position and exposure favor efficient moisture capture from the western areas of the Alps, allowing it to maintain good snow conditions for much of the season. Some estimates indicate accumulated precipitation equivalent to around 930 cm per year (in favorable conditions). In addition, the domain is complemented by artificial snow production systems, especially in the lower sectors, to ensure passable slopes at the beginning and end of the season.

Morzine’s infrastructure and connectivity are also noteworthy. The domain has modern and efficient lifts, including gondolas and cable cars that allow for quick ascents from the valley. Interconnections with Avoriaz are seamless: the Prodains Express cable car is an essential link for accessing the high-altitude ski area without the need for road transport. Morzine also retains a traditional alpine character: its streets lined with wooden chalets, mountain village atmosphere, and après-ski life give it an added touch of authenticity for those looking for more than just slopes.

Finally, in terms of overall experience, Morzine combines leisure, services, and variety. It has a wide range of mountain restaurants, après-ski options (bistros, bars), complementary activities such as snowshoeing, skating, or spas, and a convenient location in relation to airports such as Geneva (approximately one hour away).
