Immense fir forests, a superb lake, a wild river and a little Canadian air… You’re in Morillon, in the heart of the Haut-Giffre Valley and the Grand Massif ski area.

The Morillon ski area

An authentic village, Morillon invites you to immerse yourself in Alpine life in an active or contemplative way… Morillon is a friendly, family-friendly village resort, whose ski area is linked to the Grand Massif.

Morillon was created by combining the old village with the hamlets of ‘Les Champs’ and ‘Le Verney’, situated at an altitude of 700 metres, and the Morillon 1100 Les Esserts resort, which was built 400 metres higher up.

Morillon 1100 is a ski-in/ski-out resort, with chalet residences harmoniously integrated into the wooded Plateau des Esserts. There are plenty of local shops and entertainment on site!

With its 5 linked resorts, the Grand Massif is the fourth largest ski area in France: 265 km of pistes for all levels up to 2500 m altitude, with Mont-Blanc in panoramic view, 139 runs and 62 ski lifts for fluid links to the resorts of Morillon, Samoëns, Sixt, les Carroz and Flaine. From forest walks to high altitude ‘wide open spaces’ skiing, from black and spicy slopes to wilderness skiing, the wide variety of terrain is sure to win you over!

For freestylers, Morillon has 3 fun zones: Marvel Enchantée, Ze KidzPark and Boarder.

Highlights of skiing in Morillon

  • Morillon is part of the Grand Massif ski area, which comprises five resorts (Flaine, Les Carroz, Samoëns, Sixt, and Morillon) with a total of 265 km of slopes and 62 ski lifts.
  • In Morillon itself, the local ski area combines two areas: the traditional village in the valley and Morillon 1100 (Les Esserts), a higher location with direct access to the slopes.
  • The resort has been awarded the “Famille Plus Montagne” label, certifying its family-friendly approach: facilities for children, adapted services, and amenities for the little ones to enjoy the environment.
  • In terms of snow and conditions, Morillon records an average of 256 cm of snow per year and around 28 days of snowfall per season. The average “snowiest week” also brings around 32 cm of snow. Due to its altitude, the domain ranges from approximately 700 m to around 2,480 m, allowing for a good vertical range and variety of altitudes for high or low slopes.
  • The Grand Massif ski area is rich and varied: approximately 139 slopes (25 green, 59 blue, 44 red, 11 black) with access via 62 ski lifts. This provides a remarkable range of options for skiers of all levels to find suitable terrain.
  • Morillon and its extension to the Grand Massif offer freeride options, with the Combe de Gers standing out as a wide off-piste route with an 800 m vertical drop that attracts advanced skiers.
  • For those who want to diversify their experience, Morillon offers cross-country skiing with up to 94.5 km of Nordic trails, a remarkable figure for an alpine resort more oriented towards downhill skiing.
  • The local area emphasizes the experience related to the environment: trails such as Marvel run through forests and offer a more scenic and relaxed route, suitable for those who want to enjoy the landscape while skiing.
  • Morillon has relatively modern lifts and efficient connections to the Grand Massif sectors, making it easy for skiers to reach higher slopes without long transfers.

Useful tips for skiing in Morillon

  1. Start from Morillon 1100: if your accommodation allows it, start the day from Les Esserts. It is easier to access the ski lifts and reduces travel time.
  2. Choose progressive routes: to build up your strength, start on the green or blue slopes (for example, “Marvel”) while your legs acclimatize, and then move on to red slopes or more technical areas of the Grand Massif.
  3. Explore off-piste with a guide: the Combe de Gers is one of the most sought-after off-piste routes. However, it is essential to have a local guide or knowledge of snow safety to avoid risks.
  4. Alternate between downhill and cross-country skiing: an ideal combination in Morillon is to spend part of the day downhill skiing and the other part cross-country skiing, taking advantage of the 94.5 km of Nordic trails offered by the resort.
  5. Pay attention to snow conditions at lower altitudes: on days when there is thawing or little snowfall, the lower slopes may be affected. On such days, it is preferable to stay in higher areas until the snow improves.
  6. Plan your final descents: if your accommodation is in the valley, check that the downhill slope at the end of the day is open to avoid having to travel by other means.
  7. Book services for children in advance: as the resort is geared towards families, facilities for children can become crowded in high season. Book ski lessons, nurseries, or the “Village des Enfants” in advance.
  8. Aim for days with low attendance: if you can ski during the week or early in the season, you will have a better experience: fewer queues, better-groomed slopes, and a quieter environment.
