Located at an altitude of 1,000 meters, just 15 minutes from Grenoble, Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse is the natural gateway to the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park. This charming mountain village combines urban proximity with a preserved environment, offering visitors an authentic snow and nature experience without straying too far from the city. Its strategic location makes it one of the favorite destinations for residents of the Isère valley for weekend getaways or family ski days.
A family-friendly and accessible ski area
The small alpine ski area of Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse offers 5 slopes (2 green, 2 blue, and 1 red) served by 3 ski lifts, ideal for beginners or those looking to improve their skills. Its wide slopes, surrounded by forests and overlooking Chamechaude—the highest peak in the massif (2,082 m)—guarantee a safe, peaceful environment surrounded by nature. This type of local resort is perfect for families, beginners, and ski schools.
The cradle of Nordic skiing in Chartreuse
Beyond downhill skiing, Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse is part of an exceptional Nordic domain, which stretches over more than 50 km of cross-country ski trails connected to Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse and the Col de Porte. This area, considered one of the most comprehensive in the massif, offers trails of varying levels, from family outings to sporting itineraries, in a forest setting that retains all the authenticity of the Chartreuse mountains.
A natural and protected environment
The resort is part of the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park, an area renowned for its biodiversity and unique landscape of forests, meadows, and limestone cliffs. This privileged environment requires respectful management: low-impact maintenance of the slopes, rational water management, and promotion of shared mobility. Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse is thus a model of sustainable mountain tourism, where nature remains the protagonist.
Activities for the whole family
In addition to skiing, the resort offers a variety of activities: snowshoeing, sledding, winter hiking trails, and play areas for children. In summer, the paths are transformed into mountain biking, trail running, and Nordic walking trails, with spectacular views of the Belledonne massif and the Grenoble basin. This four-season offering enhances the destination’s appeal throughout the year.
Heritage and local life
The village of Le Sappey has preserved its rural identity and architectural heritage: stone houses, slate roofs, and a 19th-century church overlooking the valley. Local producers offer cheeses, honey, and artisanal charcuterie, which can be sampled in the village’s restaurants and inns. This connection between tourism and agriculture reinforces the economic and social balance of the region.
Accessibility and quality of life
Less than 20 minutes from the center of Grenoble and perfectly connected by road and public transport, Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse is an example of a close and accessible mountain. Its moderate altitude and northern orientation guarantee good snow conditions in winter, while its wooded environment protects it from the wind and gives it a cozy and family-friendly character.
Limitations to consider
Its small size and relatively low altitude limit the length of the alpine skiing season, especially in mild winters. However, the diversification of activities, the quality of the Nordic domain, and the proximity to Grenoble more than compensate for this limitation.
A lively, people-oriented, and sustainable resort
Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse represents the new generation of mid-mountain resorts: lively, authentic, and committed to their environment. Its combination of proximity, scenery, sports, and respect for nature makes it an ideal destination for those seeking to reconnect with the mountains, far from the crowds but close to local life.
