Portillo is the oldest ski resort in South America, set in the Los Andes mountain range, in the Valparaíso area. It’s located at 9.383 feet height, 50 miles away from city of Los Andes, 102 miles north from Santiago de Chile, and less than 3 miles away from Paso de los Libertadores, on the Chile-Argentina border. Nowadays, Portillo is an entertainment resort for the main olympic delegations, like USA and Germany. The world’s speed skiing record was beaten in one of its slopes – the “Kilómetro Lanzado” slope, specifically designed for high speeds – in 1987 by Michael Prufer, with a max spedd of 217,68 kilometres per hour.
