La Plagne is a ski resort in the French Alps, in the Savoie department, which has 225 km of slopes and 100 km² of skiable area, reaching a maximum altitude of 3250 meters.

Characteristics of La Plagne ski resort

Since 2003, La Plagne and the neighbouring resort of Les Arcs are part of the Paradiski’s ski area. Its beautiful, although affected by global warning glacier La Chiaupe, is close to Bellecôte and allows us to draw in our minds the glacial valley of other distant years. A resort that offers trails for every level: 15 black (expert level), 30 red (advanced), 72 blue (medium level) and 10 green (beginner), and a large nordic ski area, including the north face of Bellecôte.

Access to the slopes of La Plagne is very ease, since a large part of its accommodation is nestled at the foot of the mountain. In another words, you leave the apartment, jump on the skis and star skiing carelessly. If Paradiski is an area like no other, it is that holds up to 90 ski lifts; you would only repeat a trail if you want, because the variety is rather wide.

La Plagne and Les Arcs make up Paradiski

You can sail the skies in the modern lifts and enjoy the beautiful landscapes that this hidden nature treasure in the French Alps offers you. More than 30 chair lifts, most of them detachable, 9 gondolas and 1 funitel will carry you from 1.250 meters in the lowest part of the ski area to the summit of the resort, set at 3.250 meters.

The 6 resorts that make up this vast ski area are linked by trails and mechanical lifts. You just have to choose where you want to sleep: Aime 2000, Center, Plagne Bellecote, Belle Plagne, Plagne 1800, Plagne Village / Soleil.

La Plagne is a modern ski resort, highlighting the Vanoise Express, which connects La Plagne and Les Arcs; opened in 2003, travels rapidly at more than 40 km / h, 8 gondolas and 36 comfortable detachable chair lifts. We can also see what a bobsleigh track is like, where athletes go down an icy track with a continuous line of cant, at breakneck speed.

History of the La Plagne ski resort

La Plagne was created in 1961, as many other ski resorts in the Alps, in order to save the valleys from becoming deserted. The agriculture and mining industries were trough a crisis, which led young people to leave the valley seeking for a future. During the 60’s, four towns (Aime, Bellentre, Longefoy and Macôt) created an association to defend their interests, by initiative of Dr. Borrionne, former mayor of Aime.

On 1961 December 1961, La Plagne opened, with mechanical lifts and four trails. Emile Allais, great ski champion, helped La Plagne grow and promote itself. Immediately, La Plagne became a great success.

The resort was consolidated with the Albertville Olympics in 1992 and nowadays it continues to be a great destination for all visitors. The après-ski offer is enormous and remarkable; offering Ice Karts, horse-drawn sleigh ride, paragliding and an ice grotto on the Glacier, where we will find figures of animals sculpted in ice.

From the Paradiski domain, it is worth highlighting the spectacular Vanoise Express, a two-story gondola that traverses the valley for a good kilometer; linking the Plagne and Les Arcs. It gives access to a ski area of great size, variety and beauty that is recommendable to everyone.

Activities to highlight

In La Plagne we find activities for skiers and non-skiers; Both for those who hit the mountain to enjoy the snow on skis, and for those who rather enjoy in a different approach.

If what we are looking for is adrenaline, we have activities such as quads, snowmobiles, paragliders, and a zip-line that runs through the entire resort. If we are in a more relaxed approach, we can rent a snow racer, a fun sled where we sit and steer our direction with a handlebar. We also found conventional sleds, snake gliss and snow scooters to glide through Colorado Park at 1500m altitude.

For that well-deserved moment of relax after a skiing day, we can go to one of the several spa centers that we will find. Treatments, massages, cosmetics, and thermal baths build the offer for those who come to the mountain to revitalize themselves.

Near the resort we find the Jean-Luc Crétier slalom stadium, natural waterfalls to climb in winter or visit in summer… In La Plagne we will have all the necessary facilities to make our stay in the snow as comfy as possible.

Bobsleigh run

Because of the Olympic Games in Albertsville, an Olympic bobsleigh track was built that, together with the luge (light sled) and the skeleton (simple or single sled), represent different types of sled descent.

From mid-December to April we will be able to slide through this structure, where we will reach speeds among 80 and 120 km / h. Athletes can exceed 150km / h and withstand forces up to 5G, so we are talking about a sport that requires significant physical effort.  It is one of the main appeals of the resort, both by the visitors themselves and by the residents of the commune.

The descent can be done in bobraft (a self-guided bobsleigh with automatic brake for four passengers) in speed luge (single-seater sled most similar to conventional sled, with brake) and in a three-seater bobsleigh with a professional monitor.
