Ski resort sheet
Flaine, the highest resort in the Grand Massif domain, is one of the most mythical ski resorts in the Northern Alps. Listed as a historical monument, the resort, created in 1968 by the geophysicist Éric Boissonnas in the heart of a natural cirque at an altitude of 1,600 m, is a real architectural work in itself, like an open-air museum. Forget your landmarks, immerse yourself in a condensed experience of pure pleasure. Here, cars are banished. Shops, services and ski lifts are at your feet.
The Flaine ski resort
Put on your skis and discover an exceptional resort: a melting pot of genres, Flaine reconciles past and present. Flaine is located in Haute-Savoie in France, between Geneva and Chamonix Mont-Blanc, and nestled at the top of one of the largest ski areas in France, the Grand Massif. A functional ski in/ski out resort, where everything is designed for a carefree holiday.
History of the Flaine ski resort
The project build the first gondola dates back to 1963. The skilift, built by Applevage, was innaugurated during Christmas 1967. With a capacity for 65 people, it becomes Flaine’s central unit. With a total length of 3 kilometers, this gondola covers a vertical drop of 869 meters. It is a round-trip cable car. The gondola is called Désert Blanc. The original red cabins were changed in 1976.
In 2006, the detachable 6-seater chairlift La Tête des Verds was built. In 2010, the Telecord Bissac and the Pré chairlift were replaced by two magic carpets. During 2013, a major change happened with the expansion and remodeling of most of the trails in the ski area.
At the same time, the Grand Ballacha ski lifts, the Col du Platé and Perdrix chair lifts and the Aup de Véran gondola were replaced, in order to achieve more efficiency and adaptability. In 2014, the non detachable Gérats 4-seater chair lift was built.
Flaine is the name of an old meadow in the mountains. The first records of the existence of the town date back to the 18th century.
Flaine ski resort location
The resort was created by geophysicist Éric Boissonnas, in the heart of a great natural circus at an altitude of 1600 m, and designed as an “integrated resort”; with the ski on foot concept on mind and not needing to travel in a private vehicle. It is considered as historical heritage. The resort is built on three levels: “Flaine-Forêt” (1700m), “Flaine-Forum” (1600m), “Flaine-Front de neige” (1500m), connected by two ski lifts and two pedestrian routes.
Flaine is considered one of the main tourist destinations in all the French Alps: its ski area, together with those in Morillon, Carroz, Samoëns and Sixt Fer à Cheval, build up the Grand Massif, which holds more than 265 kilometers of slopes. Its altitude and its geographical situation guarantees an exceptional layer of snow (more than 4 meters of snow at the end of the season at 2500 meters above sea level).
At 2500 m, from the top of the Grandes Platières, a unique panorama awaits you with truly unique views of the Mont-Blanc, Aravis, Belledonne and Jura chains.
The Grand Massif ski area links the resorts of Flaine, Morillon, Les Carroz, Samoëns and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval. Located between Lake Léman and Mont-Blanc, it is an astonishing location that offers those kinds of landscapes that one may point and stare in magazines.

The winter sports resort of Flaine is located at an altitude of 1600 metres, 70 km south-east of Geneva. Designed by the architect Marcel Breuer, with the concept of protecting the environment as much as possible, and not destroying nature but rather trying to integrate with it.
You will find three sectors located at different altitudes and well served by foot or by public transport provided by the resort. Its 140 kilometres of pistes are simple but varied, allowing you to enjoy a magnificent natural environment without pollution or noise.
After-ski activities are varied, you can drive a go-kart on an ice track, go paragliding or take a helicopter flight. During your stay, you will find all the services and shops together and close to your accommodation. Young and old alike can move around freely and without worry in the pedestrian-friendly centre.
