The Candanchú ski resort is the oldest resort in Spain, created in 1928. Located in the Aragonese Pyrenees, next to the Aragon River and 1 km from Port of Somport, in the French border. Neighbor Astún ski resrot, is located 27 km north of the city of Jaca.

”Candanchú” does not have much in common with the area. It comes from the French name Camp d´Anjou – “Camp danyú” -. It was a military camp of the French Anjou dynasty. The ladybug in the logo, is related to the big population of this insect in this area during the summer.

Candanchú ski resort

One of the reasons for its great popularity is that it is one of the leading resorts in Spain, having opened its doors in 1928. Candanchú is in an unbeatable location, just 28 kilometres from Jaca and 1 kilometre from the French border. It is also the closest resort to major cities such as Pau, Bayonne and Bordeaux.

The ski slopes

It is the most alpine resort in the Pyrenees, steep mountains and rugged peaks surround the more than 50 kilometres of skiable terrain. In the shadow of the Pico del Aspe (2645 metres), the resort extends to the border with France and each descent becomes unique, thanks to its enveloping and majestic surroundings. We have 900 metres of vertical drop for skiing. Idyllic panoramic spots from where you can see the Aragon valleys, the Rioseta and Tortiellas cirque, the Aspe Valley (France) and countless neighbouring peaks of over 3000 metres such as the Balaitus or the Picos del Infierno.

Ski resort activities

It offers ski lifts, an infirmary and a ski school. It has various restaurants throughout the resort, equipment rental, nursery and sledging with an enclosed and prepared area that allows you to sledge in complete safety, with the convenience of going up the slope by means of a conveyor belt.

It also offers a complete cross-country ski circuit and a biathlon course. However, if you are into music and a good atmosphere, you can also visit Barambán, Candanchú’s aprés-ski at the foot of the slopes, which has already won over hundreds of skiers who enjoy this “little big fuss” among family and friends once the day’s skiing is over.

Sustainable development of Candanchú ski resort

The plenary session of Canfranc Town Council has unanimously approved the negotiation of agreements between the resorts of Astún and Candanchú and the Aramón Company. The aim is to define joint projects with Formigal and Panticosa which, in accordance with sustainable development criteria,

“CONTRIBUTE TO THE PROMOTION OF THE DECISIVE TOURISM SECTOR IN THESE REGIONS”.

The parties agreed on the importance of snow tourism as a socio-economic activity of strategic interest for the whole of the region of Aragon, and in particular for the regions of Jacetania and Alto Gállego, the Pyrenees and the mountainous areas.

Unforgettable experiences in Candanchú

The ski resort is named after the village of Candanchú. However, this town in the Aragonese Pyrenees has much more to offer to tourists, monuments, history, routes and excursions, in a truly unique natural environment. You have to come and explore and get to know it!

Belonging to the municipality of Aísa, Candanchú is heir to the Old Monastery Hospital of Santa Cristina de Somport. In fact, the remains of the latter occupy the eastern end of the current town centre of Candanchú and are well worth a visit, certainly not to be missed!

Candanchú mountain resort in summer

Outside the snow season, the valley is also a privileged place to enjoy all kinds of sports such as paragliding, mountaineering, hiking or mountain biking, among others.

For example, if what you like is hiking, in the surroundings of Candanchú, we highly recommend the GR-11 route (Senda Pirenaica), where you can enjoy the untamed nature of this mountain range, immerse yourself in the culture of these villages, but more importantly, discover day by day, stage by stage of this route, emotions, experiences, shared moments on the way and in the shelter of shelters.

And, without a doubt, the GR-65.3 route (Camino de Santiago). You can also enjoy birdwatching and a rich variety of wild fauna and flora, being common the sighting of the “sarrios” or the “flor de nieve”, which are typical of this area of the Pyrenees.
