Alpe d’Huez is a mountain in the French Alps with 1850 m altitude. The Alpe d’Huez ski resort on the mountain began to be built in 1930. In 1936, the first ski lift was installed. Alpe d’Huez owes much of its fame to its relationship with the Tour de France. Here also takes place the international music festival Tomorrowland Winter. Albiez-Montrond is an authentic alpine village, located 1 hour from Chambéry, above Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne.

History of Alpe d’Huez

The ski resort that has been growing since the 1950s on the territory of the city of Albiez-le-Vieux. Labeled under the name “Albiez” and includes other cities, Albiez le Jeune in the North, the Old Albiez Montrond in the South. Formerly divided into two cities, the former Albiez Montrond and were united in 1972 to form the city called Albiez-Montrond.

Resort Location

In the heart of the mountains, where the villages are a quiet refuge to relax and enjoy the fantastic scenery. Both very close to the mountain, this vast moraine plateau 12 km long and 3 km wide, cut by streams, provides a pleasant feeling of freedom and a panoramic view of all the surrounding mountains.

Composed by several small villages, the city of Gevoudaz stretches up to 1616 m, Mollard and Chalmieu at 1580 meters, with no more than 240 inhabitants in 1875.

Distribution and access to the slopes

Due to the design of its slopes, with the needs of beginners and intermediate skiers in mind, the Albiez-Montrond ski area is an ideal destination for families. The easy and intermediate difficulty tracks are one step away from the chalets and lodges. These are also accessible through free buses. The ski area offers different facilities and activities for children: nursery, snow kindergarten, activity center, recreational parks with snow games, appropriate surfaces for sledding and special paths for children.

Alpe d’Huez ski resort has more than 30 experienced ski instructors in different schools, offering courses for children without ski experience, starting at the age of 4 years. There are test classes even for the youngest (from 2 years old or 2,5 years old). For skiing beginners, there are three green slopes with an electric ramp, to practice and improve the technique.

Children have the opportunity to practice Skijöring, being sledged by a donkey. The yooner guarantees the whole family the speed feeling and fully enjoyable pleasure of sliding. This yooner is a sled with only a blade and a secured chair. Access to the ski area is via Rue A 43 or by train. The closest railway station to Albiez-Montrond is 16 kilometers away from Saint-Jean de Maurienne.

An almost endless skiable domain

To get to the 6 ski resorts of Les Sybelles, it is necessary to travel 20 minutes by car. Using both ski areas for one day is possible thanks to a special forfait. The renowned „Ici et ailleurs“ (here and there) allows skiers access to 310 km of the Les Sybelles slopes. This ski passage also enables the use of 600 kilometers of trails in the nearby Vallées ski area, which is 45 minutes away by car.

Albiez-Montrond provides winter athletes with a total of 950 kilometers of slopes. However, the slopes of Alpe d’Huez completely satisfy its visitors.

If you want to ski, or simply enjoy a quiet family vacation, this may be the best option. In addition to the slopes being well marked and well groomed, the ski area also has a large laminated area for cross-country skiing and other winter activities such as ski hiking.

Albiez-Montrond is the home of Alpe d’Huez

It seems the town is hanging on the slopes. One wonders sometimes what might motivate Neolithic men to settle here on the mountain (many traces of the ancient Iron Age occupation – around 500 BC. – including graves and graves containing bronze pins, bracelets, brooches and amber beads).

Located in Maurienne, in the heart of Savoy, the town of Albiez-Montrond is dominated to the east by Mount Emy (2797 m) and the ridge walks to the magnificent spiers of southeast Arves at 3514 m.

Today, the population of Albiez-Montrond is about 400 inhabitants. It has grown steadily since 1972. Tourism and the production of milk for the elaboration of Beaufort cheese (designation of origin) in the dairy cooperatives of the Arves valley (repeatedly awarded at the Paris agricultural fair), are the two main economic activities of the village.

It is possible to see in the summer, thanks to mobile milking facilities, the milking that takes place near pastures. Thanks to a tractor, the necessary equipment for milking upland cattle can be moved easily. This allows the animal to be more relaxed, in addition to the machine adapting to the size of the animal.

The climate is characterized by an excellent sun of 1973 hours / year, long snow (almost 6 months), low rainfall, 960 mm / year, and respectable sunshine. The sky of the Albiez-Montrond plateau is often compared to the Mediterranean.

Additionally, these advantages have made this area and Arvan (named after the river that rises at the foot of the St Sorlin glacier) an impressive location at the 1600 m elevation.
