He found coal there after enlisting the help of the indigenous people, the only inhabitants of the area in the 1890s. But he was cursed by the local tribe after he refused to marry the chief’s daughter despite his promise.
Fernie is now an attractive tourist town, named ‘the coolest town in North America’ by Rolling Stone Magazine.
Sustainable development of the Fernie Alpine ski resort
Environmental preservation of the mountain is a key priority for the Fernie ski resort.
LONG-TERM MEASURES ARE PUT IN PLACE TO LIMIT THE IMPACT OF THE SKI RESORT ON THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT.
For instance, the slopes are only kept open when sufficient snow is available and waste is appropriately sorted in the ski resort. The only drawback is that some lifts still run on diesel.
