Peyragudes

France | Región: French Pyrenees

Located in the heart of the central Pyrenees, the Peyragudes ski resort was created in 1988 from the merger of two historic ski areas: Peyresourde and Les Agudes. This modern resort covers nearly 1,500 hectares, between 1,600 and 2,400 metres above sea level, offering extensive skiing on both sides of a majestic mountain. Overlooking both the Louron Valley (Hautes-Pyrénées) and the Larboust Valley (Haute-Garonne), Peyragudes combines spectacular views with a wide range of activities for all types of skiers.

The Peyragudes ski resort

The Peyragudes ski area covers more than 60 kilometres of slopes, offering spectacular views of the surrounding peaks rising to 3,000 metres above sea level. Its wide, undulating slopes are suitable for both beginners and more technical skiers. One of the resort’s major attractions is the Vallée Blanche, a 6-kilometre off-piste route that appeals to adventure seekers and freeriders. The resort is very popular with riders and also welcomes snowboarders. The recent installation of the Skyvall gondola lift has improved access and encouraged more active and dynamic tourism.

In addition to skiing, Peyragudes offers a wide range of winter activities: snowshoeing, dog sledding, unusual nights in igloos with breakfast in the mountains, tandem paragliding, speed riding, airboarding (inflatable sledding), snake gliss (group sledding) and yooner (sledding with suspension). For relaxation, the Spassio wellness centre at the foot of the slopes and the Balnéa thermal spa centre 15 km away offer the ideal setting to unwind.

The resort is also renowned for its ability to adapt to changing snow conditions: even if there is not enough snow, the Christmas festivities remain lively and convivial. However, January remains the best time to enjoy skiing in Peyragudes to the full. Finally, the No Souci card allows visitors to book their ski pass online, avoiding queues and sold-out passes, while also making savings.

The Peyragudes ski resort is committed to sustainable development

The Peyragudes resort combines modernity and respect for the environment by integrating innovative technologies in the service of sustainable development.

Since 2018, it has been using a hybrid snow groomer to maintain its slopes. Quieter and easier to drive than conventional models, this snow groomer, powered by a 12.8-litre, 400-horsepower Mercedes 6-cylinder engine, reduces fuel consumption by 20 to 25% while limiting the risk of pollution from hydraulic circuits. This technical advance contributes to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions in the area.

Aware of the impact of travel, Peyragudes also encourages alternative solutions such as carpooling and the ‘mountain Uber’ concept to limit greenhouse gas emissions from cars.

Committed to the long term, the resort has been awarded the Excellence level of the BIOM indicator, recognising its ongoing efforts in terms of environmental responsibility. Finally, Peyragudes continues to invest in the modernisation of its infrastructure, as demonstrated by the recent installation of a new gondola lift, combining comfort and respect for the environment.

For snow sports enthusiasts, snake gliss offers a fun and friendly experience: several sledges are connected to each other, forming a giant snake that hurtles down the slopes at high speed. And don’t worry about the climb back up, as the ski lifts will take your sledge back to the start so you can enjoy multiple descents with family or friends.

The resort is also innovating with new activities such as the panoramic terrace, offering a unique ‘walking on air’ experience, ideal for relaxing while enjoying the scenery. Not to mention ice karting, which will delight young and old alike in search of original entertainment.

The Peyragudes mountain resort in summer

Summer in Peyragudes is synonymous with thrills and discoveries in the heart of nature. The Bike Park is the ideal place for mountain biking enthusiasts, offering a variety of downhill trails, FatBike and bike trekking, suitable for all levels. In addition to the adrenaline rush, the magnificent landscapes of the Pyrenees provide an exceptional setting for these sporting outings.

Skiing in Peyragudes: the resort’s strong points

Peyragudes stretches across both sides of the mountain, over the Les Agudes and Peyresourde sectors, offering varying sun exposure throughout the day. Thanks to this dual orientation, some runs are well lit in the morning, while others are well lit in the evening, helping skiers find the best snow conditions at any time of day.

Modern infrastructure and efficient access (Skyvall)

One of the most notable innovations in Peyragudes is the Skyvall gondola lift, inaugurated in 2019, which connects the Loudenvielle valley (at an altitude of 965 m) with the base of the resort (at around 1,600 m). This valley lift provides direct access to the ski area without the need for road transport and significantly reduces the environmental impact. In addition, the internal lifts are mainly composed of high-speed 4- and 6-seater chairlifts, along with additional 3- or 4-seater chairlifts and magic carpets for beginners. With a total of 19 lifts in operation, the flow of traffic in the ski area is good even on busy days.

Size of the ski area and variety of slopes

Peyragudes offers approximately 60 km of skiable slopes distributed among a total of 51 runs. The categories are divided into 6 green, 23 blue, 18 red, and 4 black. This makes the ski area attractive to beginners as well as intermediate and advanced skiers looking for challenging runs. The useful altitude difference of the domain is between 1,600 m and 2,400 m, providing a vertical drop of about 800 m, which allows for long runs.

Sustainable development and a hub for innovation

The resort has an ambitious expansion project: the incorporation of the Cap des Hittes sector improves the domain’s offering and provides higher altitude slopes with better natural snow conditions, as a strategy to combat climate change. In terms of artificial snow production, Peyragudes has 230 snow cannons to reinforce key slopes during periods of low snowfall.

Complementary services and activities for everyone

Peyragudes is not limited to downhill skiing: it has freestyle areas (snowparks), a “fun cross” slope, N’PY Moov areas for beginners, and leisure activities such as snowshoeing, night excursions, and even lunchtime dinners in a cabin at high altitude. The resort also pays special attention to families: it has the Famille Plus label, which means services adapted for children, accessibility, and facilities in the ski area for learning to ski.

Natural environment, panoramic views, and Pyrenean atmosphere

Located in the middle of the Louron Valley, Peyragudes overlooks a high-mountain environment with peaks over 3,000 m framing the views, providing considerable scenic appeal. Its location allows it to receive good sunshine: the two “sunny” slopes ensure that many slopes enjoy the sun for much of the day. In addition, the relatively unspoiled natural environment gives it an authentic Pyrenean mountain atmosphere, far from the crowds of some larger resorts.

Useful tips for visiting Peyragudes

  • Start your days in the sector that is well lit at that time of day (Agudes or Peyresourde) to take advantage of the best snow conditions.
  • Use the Skyvall gondola from Loudenvielle if you are staying in the valley, to avoid traveling by road and enjoy the panoramic ascent.
  • If there is little snow, head for the slopes covered by snow cannons, which usually remain operational.
  • Set aside some time to enjoy the freestyle areas and parks, which are ideal for changing the pace of the day.
  • For advanced skiers, find the most technical descents behind the Cap des Hittes expansion, which promises more challenging slopes.
  • Take advantage of the surroundings: before or after skiing, explore snowshoe trails or scenic outings around the Louron Valley.
