Sustainable development at Palisades Tahoe

When former Squaw Valley presented the challenge to its energy supplier, Liberty Utilities, they were prepared to go their separate ways in case their proposal was not supported. It turned out that Liberty’s plans to use renewable energy were directly related to Palisades Tahoe’s, so it made sense to work with one of their biggest customers to make the switch.

“DID YOU KNOW THAT PALISADES TAHOE ALPINE MEADOWS WILL BE THE FIRST SKI RESORT TO BE POWERED 100% BY RENEWABLE ENERGY?”

The resort will get all of its energy from a massive 60 megawatt solar array (enough to power more than 1,200 homes) and then pay a premium to Liberty Utilities for every kilowatt hour that is not supplied by the solar array. Liberty Utilities then uses this capital to stimulate clean energy production, enabling other businesses and customers to access renewable energy on a smaller scale. Plans for the entire programme are on the desk of the State of California and are expected to be approved within the next two months.

Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Rather than a ball and clubs, though, players play with a spinning disc. This sport shares with “ball golf” the goal of completing each hole in as few strokes as possible (or, in the case of disc golf, as few throws as possible). Trees, bushes and changes in the terrain around the fairways provide challenging obstacles for the golfer. Finally, the putt lands in the basket and the hole is finished.
