In the heart of the Ötzal valley lies the Obergurgl-Hochgurgl ski resort in the Austrian Tyrol, made famous in the 1930s by explorer Auguste Piccard, who crashed on the Grosser Gurgler Ferner glacier during a hot-air balloon flight.
Obergurgl ski resort
The Obergurgl-Hochgurgl ski resort offers almost 110 kilometres of pistes with guaranteed snow throughout the season thanks to its altitude of 3000 metres. Obergurgl lies at the bottom of the valley at 1930 metres.
From there, there are no more roads, there is nothing: you are at the end of the world! The resort is rather elegant, upmarket, quite small but incredibly quiet. You can almost hear the sound of snow under your feet.
Moreover, its setting, with a view of some 20 peaks, is exceptional and the area of about 110 km allows you to ski or snowboard in peace. This is an increasingly rare opportunity in Europe.
The tranquillity that reigns here also makes it a unique destination for those seeking more peace and quiet just a few kilometres from nearby Sölden.
The Obergurgl ski resort is well complemented by the high-altitude resort of Horchgurgl (2150 m), the highest parish in Austria, with a ski area that reaches an altitude of 3080 metres.
Sustainable development of the Obergurgl ski resort
In recent years, the Austrian Cableway Association has invested heavily in quality, safety, technology and the environment. Not for nothing is Austria the world leader in this market.
90% OF ALL AUSTRIAN ROPEWAYS RUN ON RENEWABLE ENERGY.
The main attraction in Obergurgl is Gurgl’s Top Mountain Star, a viewing platform with a bar at a height of 3,080 metres on the summit of the Wurmkogl. The high altitude and the two glaciers, suitable for winter sports up to 3,340 metres, guarantee good snow conditions. Austria’s largest glacier ski area allows skiing until the end of May, always with the utmost respect for the environment.
