La Giettaz

La Giettaz-en-Aravis is a ski and winter sports resort of Aravis, located in the La Giettaz commune, in the Savoie department, by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The ski resort is connected to the enourmous Portes du Mont-Blanc skiable domain with the chance on visiting the Évasion Mont-Blanc area.

History of the La Giettaz ski resort

For a long time, it was just a small mountain farming village. With the arrival of the 20th century, its tourist activity began, more specifically sports tourism. The resort, recently recognized as ”Station Verte”, is linked to the Portes du Mont-Blanc domain, straddling Savoy and Haute Savoie. With its own history and charm, it offers an astonishing setting for practicing winter sports and mountain activities during summer.

The management of the town and the resort is carried out by the Val d’Arly Intermunicipal Tourism Office (whose promotion on the Internet is carried out under the brand “Val d’Arly Mont Blanc”), created in 2011. This organization manages the other three Flumet resorts: Saint-Nicolas-la-Chapelle, Crest-Voland Cohennoz and Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe.

From the resort we can head to the alpine or Nordic domain.

The domain of Portes du Mont-Blanc, with more than 100 km of slopes spread over 3 sectors, merge by skis, and another one accessible by road (Cordon – La Charbonnière).

In the La Giettaz sector, we face a 900 m long boardercross, nestled at the top of Torraz, next to the snowpark. It has a beginners area and a freestyle park for professionals. The ” eco ” side of the resort is found in its natural wood modules. To enjoy on rails, ramps and halfpipe, a special ski pass is offered that includes access to the Tête du Torraz and Grande Rare chairlifts and the Torraz ski lift (the latter, unlimited).

In the Combloux sector we have two slopes accessible by the Plaine Joux ski lift, a boardercross of 800m and a difference of 150m on the Ambourzalles trail.  We find the snowpark “La Croix” on the same name’s trail.

In the Sector Megève / Le Jaillet sector is the boardercross “des 7 Nains-Blance Neige”, reachable by the La Ravine chairlift and the “des 7 Nains” ski lift .

Perhaps the most interesting ski pass is the one that includes the pass to Evasion Mont-Blanc, giving access to more than 445 km of slopes spread over 8 ski resorts. If you are a skier or snowboarder, you not a single excuse for not visiting the resort.

One of the best Savoyard resorts

It’s worth to mention that the La Giettaz sector has the best snow when quality and texture are the topics, due to its northwest orientation. Through the Grande Rare and Tête du Torraz chairlifts, you will quickly reach the dome of the domain (set at 1930 m above sea level). From the highest point of the resort we can admire Beaufortain, Avaris and the majestic Mont Blanc peaks. We follow a succession of trails a bit far from the ski lifts.

Dive into the conifers and the deep silence of the mountain, and hopefully you can see goats and deers as you glide. After a visit to the vast part of the domain, the best way to return to the resort is via the astonishing blue La Tréffléannaise trail from Christomet (1853 m). (Suitable for all levels except, perhaps, beginners). La Giettaz also has a modest architectural heritage that bears witness to its ancient history.
