Châtel

Châtel is a resort for both winter and summer sports, a few steps from Avoriaz. Its ski area is part of the 14 resorts of Portes du Soleil. Between the winter lights and the reflections of the mountain, uncover the pleasure of simply being in the mountains, in a Northern Alps ski resort marked by harmony and balance, tradition and modernity.

The Super-Châtel area provides access to the Morgins and Torgon resorts. It is the most popular with beginner skiers and Snowpark enthusiasts. The Linga – Pré La Joux area provides access to the Avoriaz resort, and is considered more difficult for beginners.

Location of the Châtel ski resort

Located on the French-Swiss border of the Portes du Soleil domain, near the Thonon-Les-Bains and Aigle TGV station (Swiss station, used as a transfer from Geneva Cointrin International Airport). The Châtel ski resort stands out for its family-friendly and village-like character. At an altitude of 1200 m, the chalets and the traditional atmosphere of Châtel contribute to the identity of the resort.  This is the main asset of Châtel, a guaranteed charming stay.

The numerous reception and leisure facilities for children make Châtel an ideal holiday destination for families. The complex has the “Famille Plus Montagne” quality seal.

Châtel offers winter sports enthusiasts 45 ski slopes (83 km in total) served by 43 ski lifts. The Châtel ski pass allows you to ski in part of La Chapelle d’Abondance, the Swiss resort of Morgins and the entire Torgon Swiss resort. In total, we found 130 kilometers available of slopes. The ” great skiing ” is also possible thanks to the linked area of Portes du Soleil. Its 650 km of slopes with 196 ski lifts are accessible through the neighboring resorts of Avoriaz, Torgon and Morgins.

Village resort with traditional architectural features, has a contained ski area. The extension to a large linked area, friendliness and warm welcome to families, are the main assets of Châtel.

Alpine ski area

The Châtel ski area covers two sectors: the Super-Châtel / Barbossine and Linga / Pré La Joux areas, as well as a private facility in the village (Linga district).

  • Super-Châtel sector provides access to the neighboring resorts of Morgins and Torgon. It is most popular among beginner skiers and Snowpark enthusiasts.
  • The Linga – Pré La Joux’ sector provides access to the Avoriaz resort, and is considered more difficult.

2 removable chair lifts have recently been installed (one 4-seater and a 6-seater as well), linking the Super-Châtel and Linga sectors. Both depart from Vonnes, near Morgins, on the Swiss border, and reduce the use of buses and private vehicles.

Châtel has a total of 45 trails (including 6 black, 15 red, 15 blue and 9 green). The trails reach a total length of 83 km at elevations of 1100 and 2200 meters above sea level; with vertical drops up to 1000 meters. But Châtel’s forfait allows you to expand your particular ” playground ”. Remember that it gives access to the Swiss station of Torgon, the Corbeau sector of the Swiss station of Morgins, as well as to the Braitaz sector of Chapelle d’Abondance. In total, 130 km of slopes are available for skiers who wish to stay in the Val d’Abondance sector.

Finally, it should be noted that from Châtel, direct links to Avoriaz and the Swiss resort of Torgon and Morgins give access to the large area of Portes du Soleil and its 650 km of slopes with 196 ski lifts.

A free ski shuttle from the village center covers all areas (Super-Châtel / Barbossine and Linga / Pré La Joux). These buses operate from 8 am until the closure of the ski area on continuous routes.

Go cross-country skiing at Châtel

The snow offer is complemented by 7 marked routes for snowshoeing and a common Nordic area in Val d’Abondance (40 km of marked trails).

In the Nordic area of Val d’Abondance you will find: 7 cross-country ski trails, 8 Nordic routes (cross-country skiing, hiking, snowshoeing), an initiation route, a play area and a biathlon stadium.

In addition, in Châtel, 4 ski area facilities are accessible to pedestrians or snowshoe enthusiasts. They allow you easy access to several marked and safe Nordic routes: Petit-Châtel loop, Super-Châtel loop and Col de Bassachaux.

Snowparks and play areas of Châtel

The “Smoothpark”, the snowpark located in the Super Châtel / Barbossine sector, offers all the equipment that freestylers expect. From modules for all levels (kickers, boxes, rails, quarter pipe, boardercross …), a “Chill” corner with sound system, picnic table, self-service barbecue … A video capture system, the “Live Park”, adorns the area to immortalize your descends and share them on your social media.

The delimited and safe recreational park is located near the Bellevue blue trail in the Super-Châtel / Chalet Neuf sector. It allows, whether accompanied or not by ski teaching professionals, to measure your speed using a time cell and a light display. But above all and most importantly, to learn how to control your braking distance.

The arvas park, located in the Super-Châtel sector near the La Chanterelle trail, offers courses teached by rescuers. With the aim of training in a fun way and through demonstrations, the handling of the DVA (Avalanche Victim Detector) or the opportunity to test your very own equipment. It is a self-service area. For further information or a demonstration, simply contact the monitors in the area.

The Mauve Milka trail, located in Super-Châtel, is a fun trail dedicated to children. It is about the local mountain fauna, themed and decorated with explanatory figures and panels. During the school holidays, the Milka monitors organize games and distribute chocolate.

How to get to the neighboring resorts without getting off the skis?

  • Torgon: from Super-Châtel, you reach the Swiss resort of Torgon by the Tour de Don ski lift.
  • Morgins: from Super-Châtel, the connection to the slopes with the Morgins resort is via the Chalet Neuf ski lift.
  • La Chapelle d’Abondance: from the Barbossine sector, you reach the Swiss resort of Torgon via the Col de Croix red trail. Then take the Djeu des Têtes ski lift and the Conches 2000. Several routes are available for the Panthiaz gondola that provides access to the Chapelle d’Abondance. Finally, a shuttle bus connects to the Crêt Béni sector.
  • Avoriaz: this resort is directly accessible from the slopes, and very easy to find with the Châtel ski map available on your phone.

From the Pré-la-Joux sector, take the Pierre-Longue chairlift and then the Rochassons chairlift. At the top, the Chaux-Fleuri red trail or the Grand Plan blue piste allow you to change to the Avoriaz ski resort. All those activites are avaible by a short transfer from Geneva !
