Castle Mountain ski resort is situated at the East of Alberta, just at the border of British Colombia. The resort is located in the Rocky Mountains at 1450 meters above the sea level. To access the station from the nearest city Lethbridge, take the #3 highway until Picher, then go to Beaver Mines and take the road 774 which ends at the resort of Canada.

Castle Mountain Resort is located in the southwestern corner of Alberta, close to the British Columbia border. Set in the heart of the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 1,450 meters, the resort offers stunning alpine scenery and ideal snow conditions throughout the winter season. The drive from Lethbridge is straightforward: follow Highway 3 to Pincher Creek, then continue to Beaver Mines and take Highway 774, which leads directly to the resort.

Skiing across two peaks

Castle Mountain Resort is spread across two impressive peaks: Gravenstafel Peak, standing at 2,391 meters, and Mount Haig, reaching 2,546 meters. These mountains define the terrain of the resort and offer a varied landscape that caters to all levels of skiers and snowboarders.

The ski area is served by three main chairlifts: the Sundance Chairlift, also known as the Blue Chair; the Tamarack Chairlift, known as the Red Chair; and the Huckleberry Chairlift, which primarily services the second mountain. In addition, a brand-new high-speed lift, the Stagecoach Express, is set to begin operations for the 2025–2026 season. This modern addition will enhance access to previously remote terrain and replace the area once used for cat skiing.

On the right side of the resort’s trail map, visitors will find a broad selection of slopes ranging from gentle beginner runs to more challenging intermediate descents. This area is ideal for families and those just starting out. For more experienced skiers, the Chute Side—located below the Skyline Traverse—offers steeper, more technical terrain with deep powder snow, making it a favorite for advanced and expert riders. To return from the Chute Side to the main ski area, skiers can follow the Chinch Traverse, which reconnects with the main lift zone.

The second mountain, accessible via the Huckleberry Chairlift, is particularly well suited for beginner and intermediate skiers. Here, visitors can enjoy tree-lined runs and glade skiing through scenic areas like Ghost Rider and Ambush, offering a sense of peaceful seclusion in the forest.

Changes to activities

It’s important to note that Castle Mountain’s cat skiing program is no longer offered. The 2024–2025 season marked the final year of this unique experience, as the area it once covered will soon be serviced by the Stagecoach Express lift. Additionally, the resort’s popular Full Moon Snowshoe & Fine Dining Experience has also been discontinued and is no longer part of the activity offerings.

Unforgettable experiences at Castle Mountain Resort

One of the resort’s most memorable past experiences was the Full Moon Snowshoe & Fine Dining Experience. The adventure began with a scenic ride on the Huckleberry Chairlift, timed with the final ascent of the day as the last skiers made their way off the mountain. At the summit, guests would pause to admire the stunning views over the Westcastle Valley before beginning their descent.

The snowshoe route, mostly downhill, was designed to be accessible even to those without prior experience. Guided by knowledgeable staff, participants enjoyed a peaceful and informative walk under the moonlight. After 90 minutes to two hours of snowshoeing, the experience concluded with a gourmet dinner and a cozy introduction to the mountain’s lodging facilities.

Another standout offering from Castle Mountain was the Powder Stagecoach, one of the few experiences of its kind in North America. Combining lift access with snow groomer transportation, guests explored over 900 acres of pristine terrain on some of the continent’s finest powder. The groomer would deliver skiers to untouched off-piste areas for a truly exhilarating backcountry-style descent, without the need for hiking or skinning.

Summers at Castle Mountain Resort

Castle Mountain Resort has a fascinating history. Originally known as West Castle Ski Resort, it was founded in 1966 by Paul Klaas, a Swiss immigrant who first discovered the area on horseback long before paved roads existed in the region. His passion for skiing and exploration eventually led to the creation of the resort in the West Castle Valley. While the Haig Lake High Country Experience, once offered in partnership with local guides, is no longer available, the surrounding region remains a compelling destination for summer visitors.

During the warmer months, the Castle area is crisscrossed by lightly travelled roads and scenic trails that are ideal for hiking, cycling, and horseback riding. Whether you’re looking for a short 25-kilometre excursion or a challenging full-day route exceeding 100 kilometres, there are plenty of opportunities to discover the peaceful beauty of this remote corner of Alberta.
