Big White has always been a family stop, but the ski resort has matured significantly in the last two decades since it was just a place to drive to, ski for a while and drive back. On the mountain, you’ll find 16 lifts that whizz you upwards to access 7,355 acres (the equivalent of 7,000 foot- ball fields) of skiable terrain, over 118 designated trails and an annual snowfall of over 20 feet.
Big White offers a wide accommodation offer, to suite everything from economy to luxury and 18 on-mountain restaurants, cafe’s, pubs and nightclubs. You’ll likely be experiencing weather in the 23 Farenheit range. You’ll find a terrain park that is so big that it has its own weather system.
Big White ski resort
The Big White ski resort, or simply Big White, is a ski resort that lies 56 km (35 mi) southeast of Kelowna in the southern interior of British Columbia. The resort is set on Big White Mountain, the summit of the Okanagan Highland, an area of the highlands between the Monashee Mountains and the Okanagan Valley.
It is also the third busiest resort in British Columbia, after Whistler-Blackcomb and Sun Peaks. Additionally, in 2019, Big White was awarded the third best ski resort in the nation by Snowpak.com
The mountaintop is at 2,319 m (7,608 ft) with a vertical gain of 777 m (2,549 ft), accessed by 16 lifts. The mountain has an annual snowfall of 750 cm (8.5 inches). Big White has 11 km2 of skiable terrain as well as 150,000 m2 of evening skiing, being the largest night skiing area in Western Canada!
Sustainable development of the Big White ski resort
In the summer of 2018, Big White
installed three water refill stations throughout the resort, encouraging the use of metal, glass and reusable plastic water bottles instead of bottled water.
Bringing bottled water to the resort is not necessary at all, as all the water that comes out of the taps comes from the pristine, clean, mountain-fed Lake Rhonda at the base of The Cliff, which holds some of the finest water in the entire world.
As a gift from the resort, all 2018/2019 staff were given a reusable metal water bottle in their first week at the resort, to ensure that they too can help in the battle against plastic bottles.
