Baqueira Beret is a ski resort located in the Val d’Aran and Valls d’Àneu. Its ski pass offers skiers and snowboarders up to 160 km of slopes with 5 km of trails and other routes featuring untreated snow. This is thanks to the creation of the new Baciver area, added to the three already historic Baqueira, Beret and Bonaigua.
Baqueira consists of three main areas: the first, Baqueira, the classic, the original, the pioneer. The second, Bonaigua, to the east, is somewhat more complicated, which works best for the more expert skiers. Whereas finally, Beret, is recommended for families and beginners, since there are mostly soft slopes. All have their own parking area.
Baqueira Beret ski resort
Situation and location of Baqueira
Baqueira Beret, was inaugurated on December 6 1964, and is located in the Aran Valley, province of Lleida. Since 2003 part of its trails run through the neighboring Aneu Valley, with the Puerto de la Bonaigua on the other side. It is the only Spanish resort located on the northern side of the Pyrenees.
As a fun fact, in 1964 the first worker at the resort as well as the first person to get a chairlift ride in the resort, is the father of the current CCO (chief commercial officer) of the Baqueira Beret ski resort.
The most important population is in Viella, capital of the Val d’Aran. It is a modern and beautiful city, with many services, restaurants, shops, spaces for walking and with a good offer of apress-ski activities, including the ice-skating rink, the sturgeon farm in Era or the Banhs de Tredós Spa.
From the resort you can see mountain peaks that exceed 3000 meters, such as Maladeta and Aneto. The mountains of Cap de Vaquèira and Tuc deth Dossau touch the highest points of the resort. The alternate activities to skiing during winter include horse or dog sled rides, excursions to the semi-abandoned village of Montgarri, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling.
There are more than 165 skiable kilometres (including the Baciver area), it has exceptional off-piste slopes such as Escornacabres, 38 lifts that take 60,000 people up and down per hour, excellent snow quality (it faces northwest, towards the Atlantic, and this favours its condition). In addition, the food in its restaurants is quite good, and as if that weren’t enough, the landscapes of the Val d’Aran that surround it are dazzlingly beautiful.
Situation of the Baqueira ski lifts
The ski lifts are being progressively renewed and although during peak periods there are long waiting times, in general transport is efficient thanks to the 36 ski lifts that offer a flow of skiers of over 61,024 people per hour.
Skiing in Baqueira Beret : additional information about the ski resort
The highest point of the resort is the Cap de Baciver at 2,610 m. offering breathtaking views of the Pyrenees.
The Val d’Aran is known for its natural environment. Similarly, it is known for the heavy snowfalls it receives in this unique setting. The rivers Garona and Noguera Pallaresa run through the valley, surrounded by peaks of over 3,000 metres above sea level. The valley is home to more than two hundred lakes.
Baqueira Beret, 160km of ski runs
Its large forests of fir, pine and beech trees form an exceptional skiing area crowned by its summit at an altitude of 2510mts. The so-called “resort of kings” is also famous for being the resort of choice for many years for the Spanish Royal family and other celebrities.
The Aranese resort has been working hard on freestyle skiing for a few seasons now. For that reason, it is now home to two snowparks. Firstly, the Serra, for the less experienced, which is an initiation area with several modules where you can take your first steps. Secondly, the Comalada, which has higher level modules and is designed for high level riders.
Sustainable development of the Baqueira Beret ski resort
In 2012, a strategic plan was created to preserve the natural environment of the Val d’Aran as much as possible. From that moment on, tourism activities began to be organised to promote ecology both in the valley and in the ski resort.
And shortly thereafter, in 2014, came the valley’s recognition as a “Biosphere” which forms part of
“A PRIVATE, VOLUNTARY AND INDEPENDENT CERTIFICATION SCHEME”
which is promoted by the Institute for Responsible Tourism (ITR), an organisation associated with UNESCO and the World Tourism Organisation. This confirms that the true heritage of this natural area is its environment, its landscape and natural value. In fact, it was the first mountain destination to receive this recognition.
As a future tourist and possible skier, you should bear in mind that the Val d’Aran region has also launched a “responsible tourist guide” with the aim of making travellers aware of the pillars and philosophy that can be felt in the valley.
Unforgettable experiences in Baqueira Beret
Rediscover your thirst for adrenaline with Heliskiing
As the name of the activity suggests, Heliskiing is a form of skiing after boarding a helicopter.
The bravest and most daring skiers will enjoy the opportunity to go on a helicopter ride, and therefore, be able to explore unspoilt and uncharted terrain that can only be reached by helicopter expeditions.
A paradisiacal horse-drawn sleigh ride in Beret
This activity looks like something out of a Santa Claus movie. It is tailor-made for couples who want to try something different from the ordinary, as well as for the younger ones. As a result of the gentle trot of the horses over the snow, it will make the passengers feel like they are floating on a cloud.
Who wouldn’t want to enjoy the marvellous views of Baqueira Beret resort, next to their significant other and driven by animals that resemble the faithful reindeer of Father Christmas himself?
Gastronomy in Baqueira Beret
Baqueira Beret and good food go hand in hand. The resort has 25 restaurants and coffee shops on the slopes. Above all, we would like to give an honorable mention to the Moët Winter Lounge, that since 2019 has improved its services by offering culinary experiences of the highest quality.
There are five thematic restaurants, and more than 20 stops to eat on the slopes, not to mention areas of apres-ski and shopping that really give the resort a great atmosphere and a high degree of culinary quality.

Summer cycling: Stage your own Tour de France
You can visit Baqueira Beret throughout the year and specially during winter. However, in summer, you will enjoy a corner full of natural surroundings and some villages with wonderful people that will welcome you and make you feel at home.
The ski resort has been home to the final stage of many great cycling races such as the Tour of Spain or the Tour de France. The climb, which begins in the town of Viella, shares several kilometers with the ascent to the port of Bonaigua. As such, you can climb from Viella or from Bonaigua, passing by Esterri de Aneu and then, at the Baqueira crossing, do the final ascent to the Beret plain.
Another of the most outstanding proposals are the excursions that can be made around the Blanhiblar chairlift, located in the Beret area, at an altitude of 2,200 metres.
Once at the top, it is the perfect starting point for the countless routes that are divided into 3 different itineraries, including the Val d’Aran Viewpoint walking route, a half-hour round trip.
