Masella is an alpine ski resort located on the northern slope of the Tosa d’Alp, south of Baja Cerdanya, in the province of Girona, opened in 1967. It has one of the largest artificial snow systems in Cerdanya. There is also a ski and snowboard school with a quality and capacity according to the great importance of the ski resort. There are several restaurants and cafes located in cores and next to the slopes. In the center of Masella there is also a material rental shop, hotel, kindergarten, etc.

Masella Location

The layout of the resort is vertical, vertebrated by the “Cap del Bosc” (2.150 m) and joined by the upper part of Tosa. On both sides, there are two hollows: Comma Pregona to the east and Coma Oriola to the West. At the end of Coma Oriola (height 1.950m) there is a secondary service area (including forfaits sale) and a parking.

Together with La Molina, linked through the Alp 2500 gondola, it forms a 100Km ski area. Very varied and complete that will delight all audiences, regardless of their level of skiing.

Masella is one of the most beautiful resorts in all Pyrenees. Due to its forest in the lower part, its north orientation, which blesses it with heavy snowfalls every season and its location in the eastern Pyrenees; you won’t be needing more to enjoy sunny days in the snow. Preferred destination of many Catalans for the weekend, it is during the week when it is more recommended to visit. Without queues, hurries, or any stress, you can enjoy a varied domain, with long trails, adapted to all levels and a leisure offer quite remarkable.

Slopes layout

It has multiple slopes with a variety of levels, although its 22 red and 9 black slopes stand out, which will satisfy the needs of all skiers looking for excitement and good slopes.

The upper part of Tossa is always full of good skiers, who search for the speed feeling and steeped slopes. It stands out the red trails for its level and its beauty, also called Coma Pregona and the several black trails that go down to Coma Oriola.

The lower part of the resort is probably the prettiest and offers the most possibilities. In the area of Pia, the most recent of the resort, and at the same tame the least crowded, we will find one of the most beautiful blue slopes in the Pyrenees. Long, wide and with a very varied layout, it is called ”Familiar” and goes down to the base of the Pla de Masella. In the Pia sector there are several red and one black trails, in addition to a blue called ”Rovellons”; they are beautiful and not so long.

The central area of the resort is very suitable for beginners, with long-distance blue tracks and actually well indicated, which will allow us to improve our level of sliding. ”Plana” stands out for its length and simplicity and “Enamorats”, beautiful without being difficult.

For the off-track, it is not a very suitable resort. Although it offers interesting high areas and possibilities to start in the snow powder near the marked trails.

Masella’s unique features

Its summit is found at Tosa at 2535 meters of altitude, from which we can descend its slopes, to the 1600 meters mark, where we will find the Pla de Masella. A resort with great tradition for alpine skiing and competition, which offers a total of 18 ski lifts; 5 of them are chair lifts, 7 ski lifts, 2 telecords and 4 magic carpets.

The resort has 3 different entrances; Pla de Masella, Coma Oriola and La Pia, and could be subdivided into two sectors, the lower part, with trees and trails. The upper part, at the summit, in La Tossa at 2.535 meters, with more technical tracks, without vegetation and especially in days of mild weather, very exposed to the wind.

A very important detail, it is a resort of modern conception, designed in order that everyone who climbs a ski lift can go down the slope to the base. We find blue slopes everywhere that will allow the less experienced skier to reach the bottom, safe and sound sliding on the snow.

Night skiing in Masella

During the 2013/2014 season the resort opened the night skiing with the lighting of some tracks, thus becoming one of the only resorts in the Pyrenees that offers this possibility. The lighting of the slopes is made with great power consumption spotlights. This activity did no come without controversy, because this activity causes a serious affectation by light pollution; thus preventing the normal living of the fauna and the great visual impact that this entails, although the activity ceases to 21h and only takes place two days a week, only six weeks in winter.

The Alp 2500 gondola connects with La Molina

The Alp 2.500 gondola allows you to connect to the neighboring La Molina resort, giving rise to a 100 kilometer ski area offering one of the largest ski areas in the Pyrenees. A special forfait is available that allows access to both resorts.

The ski resorts of La Molina and Masella form one of the largest ski areas in the Pyrenees, with 145 km of slopes. The ski lift that makes the connection possible is the Cadí-Moixeró gondola that covers, in just about eight minutes, the almost three kilometers that separate La Molina car parking from Tosa d’Alp.

Access to this amazing ski domain with 132 trails (29 green, 42 blue, 44 red and 17 black) is done through a modern network of 33 ski lifts, which can transport 43.590 skiers every hour. The amout of snow produced, with 1.099 snow cannons, covers a total 115 km of slopes.

The guaranteed snow and good sunshine of the Cerdanya region, would allow you to enjoy the sun and snow through a domain with a great diversity of landscapes.
