Le Grand-Bornand is a ski resort in the French commune of the same name; located in the Haute-Savoie department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Mountain village belonging to the community of municipalities of the Valles de Thones, had over 2118 inhabitants in 2017.

History of the Le Grand Bornand ski resort

The town is located between the Bornes massif and the Aravis mountain range.  Obtained the label “Commune Touristique” thanks to the unique combination of village-resort.

The commune of Grand-Bornand includes three sectors: the Bouchet valley, the Chinaillon valley and the town of Grand-Bornand, located at the merge of the two valleys. The Bouchet Valley is nestled near the village at Cours du Borne, taking its name from the fact that it is very steep. Chinaillon, a higher area, holds most of the winter sports activity. The town of Grand-Bornand, with another perspective, is at the heart of this area.

More than four hundred chalets and houses dot the area and its surroundings, ensuring accommodation close to the slopes. The chalets are built on stone walls mounted with lime (material obtained by burning limestone) for the base; roofs and balconies are made with natural wood.  The walls are made of thick wood to keep warm temperatures inside, taken from the heart of the fir tree and squared (cut at right angles) with an axe. The roofs are covered with wooden tiles, called ancelles or tavaillons.

Near the chalet it is common to find a small pantry, called ”mazots”, where formerly canned food, hams, grains and different tools were kept. The mazots were mainly used to save a small part of the harvest each year in the event of fire. Each village has its own small chapel, simple and with few decorations, the oldest dating back from the 13th century.

Layout of the slopes at Le Grand Bornand

Accessible by cable car from the village, the alpine ski domain is nestled on the heights of Chinaillon, on the slopes of Mont Lachat de Châtillon (2100 m).

It has 44 ski trails spread over the Rosay, Joyère, Gettiers, Floria and Maroly sectors. Le Grand-Bornand has 2 cable cars, 13 chair lifts (including 3 detachable ones) and 14 ski lifts in its ski area.

A large snow park was recently established in the Maroly sector, covering over 5 hectares. Boardercross is particularly exceptional.

The resort offers night skiing from some of its slopes, accessible from the Charmieux chairlift (formerly Les Gettiers). The resort is currently cooperating with the Aravis resorts group (gathering the neighboring resorts of La Clusaz, Manigod and Saint-Jean-de-Sixt), through a common forfait. This special forfait allows access to 220 km of slopes. A skibus connects the resorts every 30 minutes.

Cross country skiing at the resort

The cross-country ski area is shared between the Bouchet Valley and Chinaillon. Routes of 3, 5, 8, 10, 15 and 20 km are organized for nordic skiing in the classic and skating modalities. Of the 67,9 km of trails, 58,5 km allow skating. We also have a link to the La Clusaz ski area.

The resort has also provided, apart from 59,1 km of winter hiking trails, 63,6 km for snowshoeing and 4 sled runs.

Most winter sports can be practiced in the Grand Bornand ski area. The slopes take advantage of the landforms of the snow-covered alpine pastures of the Col des Annes and part of the more daring slopes at the foothills of Aravis and Mont Lachat.

Beginners or connoisseurs, new snow sports enthusiasts or high mountain hiking lovers, the 90 km of the Alpine domain hides a diversity that will satisfy everyone’s willings.

These connected trails, accessible from Grand-Bornand Village (1000 m) or Grand-Bornand Chinaillon (1300 m), facing north and over south that guarantees excellent sunshine; the snowfalls are abundant and heavy thanks to the proximity of the Aravis chain, which acts as a screen catching the clouds. In collaboration with Annecy and on the occasion of the candidacy for the 2018, Winter Olympics, a biathlon stadium was created in 2010.

You don’t need to be a ski enthusiast to enjoy Le Grand Bornand

For non-skiers, Le Grand Bornand offers a variety of sports, relax and cultural activities.

The various hiking trails and snowshoes, paragliding and hot air ballooning, ice climbing, horseback riding, snowmobiling, skating rink… If we want to enjoy the snow without getting on skis.

When the weather is not good, we have a library and a cinema.

In the area, reblochon is a typical cheese, which also are offered guided tours, a heritage house and tastings to discover the flavors of the area.

After a day on the slopes or exploring the surroundings, you can relax and enjoy with the children at the ” Espace P’tits Montagnards ”; a space where you can enjoy the snow with a more relaxed approach by the snow park near the town.

The resort is a high mountain destination perfect for enjoying both winter and summer. A ski resort with all the charm of Haute Savoie.
