The great ski area of Avoriaz, inaugurated in 1966, is located at about 1800 high in the Alps, in Morzine territory, in the Haute-Savoie zone. Avoriaz it is a ski resort located at an altitude of 1800 m in the village of Morzine in Haute Savoie, France, and also part of Valais. It was opened in 1967.
History of the Avoriaz resort
The Avoriaz ski resort is located in the heart of the Portes du Soleil ski area, on a plateau facing south. Result of an ecological challenge ahead of its time, Avoriaz is a completely pedestrian ski resort. Closed to cars, where all the accommodations are accessible by ski and where the streets are ski slopes.
Jean Vuarnet, who had just been proclaimed winner of the alpine skiing event at the 1960 Olympics in Squaw Valley, wins the Avoriaz mountain pass concession. In 1978 it had 28 mechanical lifts at its facilities.
The village was built ex-nihilo (that is, it was created out of nothing). Gérard Brémond, the resort’s developer , is now the president of Pierre et Vacances. The architects were called Jacques Labro, Jean-Jacques Orzoni, and Jean-Marc Roque.
From one valley to another, winter sports enthusiasts find 100% natural, enjoyable, and safe routes between Switzerland and France. Thus, in Avoriaz, you can ski an entire week without taking the same route twice, not minding your level, in a pleasant and quiet area.
The Avoriaz Nordic Ski Area
Avoriaz offers 38 km of Nordic ski slopes, spread over 8 areas, that harmoniously cross fir forests and plateaus, to access the peaks and admire the exceptional view of the surrounding mountains. All slopes have specific markings and signs. For enthusiasts, Portes du Soleil offers 250 km of cross-country ski trails.
Avoriaz also has a wide range of snow parks that will satisfy young and professional buds: Lil’Stash, Kids Parkway, Riglet Park (especially for children) and the legendary Snowpark d’Arare. (for experts), Snowpark La Chapelle (for all levels), Superpipe (according to international standards) and Backcountry (for lovers of off-piste).
Leisure offer at the resort
From a practical point of view, ” le Village des Enfatns d’Annie Famose ” (one of the kindergartens) welcomes children and adolescents from 3 to 16 years old. In its large winter garden, qualified instructors teach skiing and snowboarding in a cozy atmosphere. For teens, the Village offers cross-country and freeride sessions to explore the Portes du Soleil area.
In addition to gliding and skiing, Avoriaz also offers a wide range of offers and leisure activities: sled runs, bowling, cinema, hot air ballooning, ice diving, snow cycling, ice skating, hot tub, bodyform, spa … Enough to satisfy even the most demanding.
Avoriaz is also famous for its nightlife. At dusk, Avoriaz lights up for lively nights, which begin with snow shows, continue in specialty restaurants, and in the resorts hot spots, like pubs and nightclubs.
Layout of the slopes
Avoriaz is ideally located in the center of the Portes du Soleil ski area and gives you access to a high altitude area. It has a new departure every day to the most beautiful views of Portes du Soleil. The massif benefits from guaranteed snow cover from December to April, with an average of 8 meters of snow during winter.
Here, you can ski in ” safari mode ” through beautiful landscapes, with open panoramas in Dents du Midi, Dents Blanches … You can alternate between the wide valleys of France and Switzerland. Its trails drawn between the trees are synonymous with fun for everyone, children and adults.
The Tour du Grand Paradis will take you on a trip to Switzerland, to the foot of Dents du Midi for more than 10 km without seeing a single chair lift. La Combe à Fleuret, at the same time, will take you to the old town of Lindarets, through pine and fir trees. And before going home, you can visit the snow garden or one of the snowparks.
Winding through the forest on the ridges of Zore, Avoriaz’s beginner sector offers stunning views of the valley. Directly accessible from the center of the ski resort, it allows you to safely ski or slide from one piste to another, away from expert skiers who have no interest in skiing there.
Avoriaz snow parks and play areas
Avoriaz has also created a new generation of 100% natural sliding areas: “The Stash”. The Stash is dedicated to all those who like the mixed slip between free ride and freestyle. Located in the heart of a large virgin snow area, the Stash is a unique place where parents and children can enjoy together. Three trails of different levels adorned by 80 wooden modules meet at the intermediate point of the ski resort. It is possible to go skiing to a hidden cabin in the heart of the fir trees forest. The trails, then part again to meander through the secret passageways of the beautiful Lindarets Forest.
Burton Snowboard and the resort are extensively developing a STASH in this area dedicated to children from 4 to 14 years old, with modules and sets adapted to their age. As with its older brother STASH, we find in LiL’STASH a succession of snow and wood modules: mini boarder cross, zigzag track kicker, woops, slip and box area, “snow plane” area for turning, 1 wooden bridge, small valleys in the forest.
