The rack railway and the sanctuary

On March 22, 1931, the rack railway of Valle del Núria was officially inaugurated. The only way of transportation accessible to travel around the surroundings of this spectacular landscape. Passengers can enjoy a different way of this climb, in which a vertical drop of 1.000 meters is travelled. With 12’5 kilometers of slopes, it connects the town of Ribas de Freser with the Valley, in Ripollés. It passes through points such as the Ribas station or the Queralbs municipality. Together with the Montserrat Rack, they are today the only rack railway lines that exist in Spain. With the Núria train line being the largest in the country.

Visitors consider it as an attraction itself. It connects in a special way with the surrounding nature and offers spectacular views. It fits perfectly with the harmony, peace, and tranquility that is breathed in the Pyrenean valley.

Núria, before being recognised as winter sports center, was and is a Sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin. According to legend, she came to the valley around the year 700. The saint, who lived four years in the valley, carved an image of the Virgin. Later, he hid in a cave when he was forced to flee when the Arabs invaded the Iberian Peninsula.

Along with the carving, he left the pot he used to make food, the Cross used over his prayers and the bell which he used to call the shepherds to come and eat.
