Ski resort sheet
Hautacam is a ski and winter sports resort in the Pyrenees, located in the city of Beaucens, in the Hautes-Pyrenees department in the Occitania region, near Argelès-Gazost and Lourdes.
History of the Hautacam ski resort
It is a medium altitude ski resort created in 1972 by Jean Labouly. The Nordic ski area dates from 1990. At the resort, specially during summer, we find a strong longboard influence. In summer you can practice downhill on the slopes.
Located at 1509 m above sea level, the Hautacam ski resort extends over several villas, including Argeès-Gazost. At the heart of the ” Grands Sites de Midi-Pyrénées ”, the Hautacam resort also benefits from a unique panorama: the Pic du Midi, the Brèche de Roland (Gavarnie), Cauterets, Lourdes, the valleys of Luz- Saint- Sauveur, d’Argelès-Gazost, Val d’Azun … Among the majestic and breath taking locations you can admire from Hautacam.
Layout of the Hautacam ski resort
The Hautacam ski area stretches between 1500 and 1813 meters above sea level. It holds 20 kilometers of ski trails with 10 mechanical lifts, mostly ski lifts and magic carpets. A total of 15 slopes between steep slopes, mountainous passages and high plateaus, to learning to ski the proper way.
For experienced skiers, the 5 red trails are perfect for carving and cornering. Intermediate level skiers will do the same on the 5 blue trails where they will improve their position, their support and chain smoother turns.
As for beginner skiers, they will (presumably) head to the 5 green trails ideally designed and marked to allow skiing in excellent condition.
A medium altitude resort, Hautacam is above all a quiet place where you can ski in the middle of the forest. It is a ski resort specially indicated for a family stay. It combines the charms of a family resort (accessible, with astonishing views, beautiful sun) and a ski domain that offers fun and safe spaces to enjoy nature.
Despite its size, Hautacam has all the necessary services for a stay in the snow that has little to envy to larger resorts. The resort has two shops for buying and renting equipment, two restaurants and a ski school.
Hautacam is well known among cyclists
Despite having excellent alpine and nordic ski slopes, Hautacam is known to cyclists for its challenging ascent.
First crossed in 1994 by Frenchman Luc Leblanc, the Hautacam-Tramassel pass was on several occasions an arrival stage for the Tour de France. By pedalling, we discover a new corner of the Argelès valley, the Val d’Azun and the peaks of the Vignemale massif. It may even encourage you to get to the end of this exceptional stage. From the top, gift yourself with the views before going down a magical descent of more than 14 km.
Put on your snowshoes and merge with nature
Nordic ski enthusiasts will find 15 kilometers of cross-country ski trails in Hautacam that allow both skating and classic skiing.
In the Nordic domain you will enjoy the surroundings of the resort at your leisure. The resort allows the practice of classic skiing and skating.
The classic modality, similar to regular walking, is ideal for a family run. Skating, similar to roller skating and regular skating, requires a little more technique and the learning of basic movements; but it allows a remarkable sense of speed after a few hours. The resort has 3 trails designed to evade, but not getting lost. Progress safely and find your pace, on properly marked and treated trails.
Whatever the state and age of the snow, all routes are allowed. In a wide open space, in a peaceful and marked environment, oxygenate and walk the mountain slopes, always respecting the natural environment.
The longest track covers 6 km. The use of snowshoes is limited to the Nordic domain, since it is not possible to use them on the downhill slopes. For those who want to “go on an adventure”, do not hesitate to ask for the assistance of a professional monitor.
Alpine ski domain of Hautacam
The alpine ski area offers 20 kilometers for a total of 16 trails. Beginners or experts, Hautacam will seduce you with its many facets: dynamism, change of scenery, ease of access and authenticity.
The Cardouet sector is the starting point; At your disposal an initiation magic carpet with a safe trail for less experienced skiers. Two ski lifts offer newcomers a first contact with the mechanical lifters to enjoy the slopes.
The Naouit sector is aimed towards the most experienced. Over the forest, virgin space and ideally prepared trails, the skier will find everything he needs to progress and enjoy sliding. The highlight of the Naouit sector may be the incredible views of the Pyrenees chain.
In short, the Hautacam resort is suitable for all levels of skiing; a resort that welcomes families, couples, children, the elderly …
Snow activities… but without skis
Although its contained size, the Hautacam resort offers a wide variety of activities to practice in addition to skiing. One of them, the visit to Mountain Luge: in a two-seater sled with brake, rented at the resort, you will enjoy downhill speeds up to 45 km / h.
Another activity to try during your visit to Hautacam, the fatbike, which is a bicycle with large tires suitable for traveling on snowy tracks and routes. Please note that fat bike rental is offered in the Nordic Hautacam area with a specially dedicated route.
If we are rather calmer visitors, we can get away for a snowshoe hike in a huge, marked and safe environment (if necessary, you can also be guided by resort monitors).
Where to eat at the resort
Hautacam receives the most demanding gourmets in its restaurants. Feel free to come and taste the local cuisine by taking a seat at a table in the “Le Hautacam” restaurant; It offers a local menu and dish of the day during the season. From its panoramic terrace, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Argelès-Gazost Valley.
At the Auberge de Tramassel you will feel like in a refuge, almost as if disconnected from the place. Astonishing views of the main mountains, friendliness and fast food if you want to get out quickly on skis.
