History of the Le Corbier ski resort

Created from scratch in the city of Villarembert in the 1960,s, the Corbier resort was born out of a simple desire; to boost the economic development in the region. Driven by the mayor, state workers, residents, and businesses, the resort’s original approach was drawn up on terrain trying to maximize the mountain.

The first works began in 1966: creation of a road and tracks, construction of infrastructure and ski lifts, as well as sewerage and electricity network. Important mention to the tourist office, “Le Tripode”, in a pyramid shape that is still incredible today. The resort was built in a short period of time and opened on December 31 1967; Ski and winter sports personalities of the time attended this inauguration.

In the early 2000,s, the Corbier resort went one step further in its desire to offer excellent skiing and joined forces with five other resorts: La Toussuire, Saint-Sorlin-d’Arves, Saint-Jean-d’Arves, Saint-Colomban-des-Villards and Les Bottières, to form the Sybelles ski domain. This initiative arises from a former baker, majority shareholder of the ski lift company, who was aspiring to a large ski area; This would connect the six resorts at the top of the Ouillon, at 2431 meters above sea level. On December 13 2003 the resort became part of the Sybelles domain, the largest in Maurienne, with 310 km of slopes and culminating at 2620 meters above sea level.

The resort itself is nestled on the way to the highest resort in La Toussuire and an important mountain pass for cycling: in particular on the Tour de France and the Critérium du Dauphiné. Likewise, the arrival of the last stage of the Tour de l’Avenir 2019 took place in Le Corbier.
