The Font Romeu ski resort

The history of the resort of Font Romeu dates back to mid-1968, when the entrepreneur Constance Durban had the brilliant idea of creating a small ski resort. Although it is not very central, it is the highest resort in France, situated at 1,593m. The municipality was very supportive of the creation of a ski resort, with the intention of first opening the planned ski lifts to the south, leaving the north face facing Les Angles.

The ski slopes

Font Romeu is one of the most famous ski resorts in the south of France. Its ski area is combined with that of the Pyrenees 2000, so that the two complexes have 44 km of downhill ski runs and 111 km of Nordic ski runs, which are necessary if we want to enjoy the snow without crowds. All this in an area where the beautiful landscapes of French Sardinia are combined with a pleasant family atmosphere.

Its facilities include 22 marked circuits, 41 ski runs, a network of 504 snow cannons, 23 lifts, 1 snowpark, 1 gondola, 1 play area, 2 toboggan runs, 4 ski schools and 1 biathlon stadium. However, the jewel in the crown is the 20-hectare play area to enjoy the descents in a wooded and panoramic environment, mainly intended for children and beginners.

Ski resort activities 

In case you are a snowboarder, the resort has one of the reference snowparks in Europe, which has been completely renovated in order to host various international sporting events. In fact, in December 2017, the resort celebrated no less than the Freestyle World Cup on its facilities.

In addition to many advantages for beginners and children, the resort offers a range of alternatives to skiing so that no one is left without enjoying the snow. One of the most popular activities is snowshoeing.

In addition, Font Romeu has up to 11 routes for this practice. The most common, of about 4 kilometres with a gentle gradient, goes from the Pleta de Farnés to the Coll del Pam viewpoint. Another experience that appeals to young and old alike is the Snake Gliss, a curious way of descending by sledge. What are they doing to respect the environment? All resorts are powered exclusively by renewable electricity. In addition, they use stride optimisation and snow production systems. The path of the snow machines is monitored to reduce fuel consumption and produce only the amount of snow needed. Less fuel, less water, less electricity.

In addition, three very interesting initiatives have been carried out: no cigarette butts on the slopes to keep the mountains clean, so special bins have been placed to dispose of cigarette butts. Recycling of ski passes and selective recycling of waste and that all machines in the resorts use bio-oil.

The Hotel des Pyrénées is located in Font Romeu, 200 metres from the ski lifts. It features a seasonal spa with an indoor pool, hammam and whirlpool. It offers views of the Pyrenees mountains.
