La Clusaz, the flagship resort of the Aravis, has just paid a heartfelt tribute to one of its most illustrious ambassadors: Candide Thovex. By inaugurating a black run in his name on the Massif de Balme, the resort has definitively anchored the legacy of this genius freeskier in its ski area. A look back at a well-deserved tribute, in a place that saw the birth and growth of one of the most influential figures in world skiing.

The Massif de Balme: a legendary playground

Located in the heart of the La Clusaz ski area, the Massif de Balme is an iconic spot for freeride and freestyle skiing enthusiasts. Its large virgin slopes, varied terrain and often optimal snow conditions make it a dream playground for skiers in search of thrills. For decades, Balme has attracted lovers of powder snow and enthusiasts of extreme skiing, becoming the scene of memorable exploits.

The resort of La Clusaz has made this massif a benchmark for freeriding, thanks in particular to the organisation of landmark events such as the Candide Invitational (2003-2008). This unique competition brought together the world’s best skiers and snowboarders, offering a spectacle of unprecedented creativity and technical skill. Even today, Balme remains a favourite destination for freeriders from all over the world.

Candide Thovex: the career of a freeskiing icon

Born in Annecy in 1982 and raised in La Clusaz, Candide Thovex started skiing at the age of two. His extraordinary talent quickly emerged and propelled him onto the international scene. His impressive list of achievements includes several gold medals at the X Games, notably in Big Air, Superpipe and Slopestyle. But Candide was never content to follow the standards of competitive skiing. Driven by a creative and daring vision, he redefined the codes of freeskiing and gradually turned to backcountry skiing.

In addition to his competitive performances, Candide stands out for his ability to reinvent the way skiing is perceived and practised. His films, such as ‘Candide Kamera’ and ‘One of Those Days’, have accumulated millions of views on the internet, fascinating both experienced skiers and the general public. His fluid and natural approach to the mountain, combined with daring tricks and a refined aesthetic, have made him a true living legend in the discipline.

A black run named after him: a tribute to his unique style

It was obvious that if a piste was to be named after Candide Thovex, it would have to be in Balme. This mountain range has seen him develop, progress and push the limits of what is possible. The new black run ‘Candide Thovex’ is therefore a true tribute to his spirit of freedom and his incomparable style.

This ungroomed but safe slope offers a unique route, allowing skiers to experience some of the sensations that made Candide famous. Located between the Crintiaux slope and the Col de Balme chairlift line, it is marked by seven markers installed in collaboration with the skier. These landmarks highlight the particular features of the route and invite skiers to discover a course that is both technical and fun. ‘I learned to ski in Balme, and Balme taught me everything. This mountain shaped my skiing. I am honoured to see a part of Balme bearing my name, and I thank the resort of La Clusaz for this recognition,’ says Candide.
