Skiset is much more than just a ski hire network. Do you really know this brand and its history? Founded in 1994 by former ski champions such as Annie Famose, now President of the group, and Léo Lacroix, Skiset is now the European leader in ski hire, with more than 800 shops in 450 resorts around the world. Every winter, more than two million customers pass through the doors of its shops to find quality equipment and personalised advice.

At the head of the company, the co-General Management is provided by Denis Marinho and Julien Gauthier. Skiset is not content to offer a premium service to its customers, but also seeks to have a positive impact on society and the environment. The brand is committed to patronage and is developing an eco-responsible approach to skiing, multiplying initiatives to combine a passion for winter sports with strong values.

Skiset and its commitment to associations and sponsorship

For several years now, Skiset has established itself as a major player in the field of ski equipment hire, but also as a company deeply committed to societal and humanitarian causes. Julien Gauthier has multiplied sponsorship initiatives, supporting associations and projects that aim to improve society and help those in need. Among these commitments, the company has notably supported Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque, an association that works for children with heart defects. In addition, one of Skiset’s operators is heavily involved in the fight against breast cancer and is the initiator of the Trail Blanc, a solidarity sports event.

The EDL x Skiset collaboration

In line with this commitment, Skiset has formed a strong partnership with the EDL (Edelweiss) ski brand, founded by Francis Decrock. This collaboration has given rise to a symbolic and charitable initiative, in line with Skiset’s values. Together, they have created a limited edition of premium skis with a pink heart, whose unique design incorporates a pink ribbon, symbolising the fight against breast cancer. For each pair of skis sold or hired, 200 euros are donated to the Institut Gustave Roussy, a leading centre for cancer research.

This initiative is part of the Pink October campaign, a global movement to raise awareness and prevent breast cancer. By producing and making available 200 pairs of skis, Skiset has helped to raise significant funds to support medical research. ‘We chose a premium ski because we wanted to make it something exceptional. The idea was to offer something unique, a ski that you enjoy giving, skiing with and showing to others,’ explains Julien Gauthier.

Through these actions, Skiset demonstrates that its commitment goes far beyond its business of renting ski equipment. The company strives to play an active role in society by supporting causes related to health, solidarity and social innovation.

Skiset, renting is more sustainable than buying

Skiset’s commitment does not stop at the societal aspect. The company is also reflecting on the environmental impact of the ski industry.

An internal study made it possible to compare the carbon footprint of a ski sold to that of a ski rented. The conclusions are striking: ‘Over the entire life cycle of a ski, between one that is rented and one that is sold on the market, the carbon impact varies by a factor of two,’ explains Julien Gauthier. Skiset has therefore adopted a strategy aimed at optimising the lifespan of its skis while reducing their environmental impact.

The company is conducting various experiments to reduce its environmental footprint, in partnership with players such as ADN Ski. ‘We don’t claim to be perfect, but we seek to practise our profession in the most responsible way possible,’ says Julien Gauthier.

At the same time, the company is conducting experiments to optimise the sustainability of its products, in particular by testing the impact of rental on their longevity and recyclability. These approaches are part of an overall strategy of eco-responsibility, with every decision aimed at reducing environmental impact.

An artistic and sustainable approach with Monsieur Lemdi

Skiset has launched an innovative project in collaboration with mountain artist Valentin Lemdi, known as Monsieur Lemdi. Originally from Annecy, this Savoyard artist draws inspiration from the series and cartoons of the 80s and 90s to create colourful and playful works. He is known for a unique characteristic: he never paints below an altitude of 1000m, in order to maintain a strong connection with the mountain world that inspires him.

As part of this project, Skiset and Monsieur Lemdi decided to give a second life to old ski boots by transforming them into works of art. ‘We had a few left over, and I wondered how we could recycle them into works of art through upcycling’. Ten of these were produced in a limited edition and exhibited in partner resorts and hotels, reflecting Skiset’s commitment to extending the life of objects while showcasing mountain art and culture.

The collaboration with EDL is part of a two-year cycle. But Skiset fully intends to continue this dynamic by supporting other important causes over the years. ‘A little preview of what’s to come: it will be with Valentin, also known as Monsieur Lemdi,’ announces Julien Gauthier. This approach reflects Skiset’s desire to multiply its solidarity actions. The company also incorporates innovative and responsible projects into its activities. In a changing sector, it proves that combining performance and commitment is possible. The ski industry can thus become a driver of positive change, both socially and environmentally.
