Leonardo Torres Quevedo (1852-1936), known as the ‘Spanish Leonardo Da Vinci’, was a Cantabrian visionary whose innovations marked the progress of engineering and technology in the 19th and early 20th century. He was the creator of the modern cable car, but also a pioneer in areas such as aeronautics, computer science and automation. He invented algebraic machines, the self-guided airship, automatic devices such as the Ajedrecista (considered one of the first automata) and developed revolutionary advances in cable transport. Leonardo Torres Quevedo: one of the most important and prestigious inventors of the 19th century

Leonardo Torres is one of the most important and prestigious inventors of the 19th and 20th centuries thanks to his numerous inventions. Ahead of his time, he created the first A-T airship in 1902 (the first zeppelin with a non-rigid structure used in the First World War), the Telekino in 1903 (the first direct-distance system), a mathematically based automaton system as the first manifestation of artificial intelligence, theelectromagnetic artimeter as one of the origins of the computer,…… we are probably talking about one of the most prestigious inventors of his time, even if his popularity is very limited.

Technologist, scientist, mathematician and prolific inventor, a restless soul who used his calculations to realise a dream: to create the cable car.

Leonardo Torres Quevedo, the father of ropeways

From the very beginning he showed an interest in ferries, funiculars and cable cars. At a very young age, in 1887, he built the first animal-powered ferry at his residence (Molledo), which overcame a height difference of only 40 metres and was 200 metres long. The road was not easy, and in 1890 he presented several complex ferry projects (Klimsenhorn-Pilatus Kulm line) to Switzerland, but they were not accepted.

The first passenger ferry was built on the Ullía Mountain in San Sebastian.

He published several scientific studies and memoirs, including ‘Sur les machines algébriques’ at a congress in Bordeaux, as well as the publication ‘machines a calculer’, presented by Leonardo Torres in Paris (1900). He was a member of the Spanish Royal Academy, taking over from the late Benito Perez Galdós. In 1922 he was appointed ‘honoris causa’ by the Sorbonne and was one of the twelve associate members of the Academy of Sciences in Paris. He died in Madrid in the winter of 1936, at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.

The Monte Ullía ferry

The ferry designed by Leonardo Torres Quevedo on Monte Ulía, in San Sebastián, was an innovative project both in terms of its technical characteristics and its purpose, as it was one of the first cableways created to transport people safely. Here is some technical and interesting information about this installation:

  1. Distance and route: it covered a distance of about 280 metres, connecting different points on Mount Ulía, an area known for its landscapes and paths.
  2. Height: it operated at a considerable height, providing a panoramic view that made it a tourist attraction as well as a functional means of transport.
  3. Capacity: it could carry up to 12 people per trip, which was a considerable advancement compared to traditional rope transport systems designed exclusively for goods.
  4. Weight of the system: the structure, including cables and cabin, was designed to support loads of over 1,500 kg, with a safety margin to ensure stability and reliability.
  5. Speed: the system operated at a controlled speed, designed to balance efficiency and safety, an innovative system for the time.
  6. Materials: the cables were made of high quality steel, while the cabin combined reinforced wood with metal elements, ensuring durability and protection from the elements.
  7. Counterweight system: One of the most important elements was the incorporation of counterweights that maintained the correct tension on the support cables, an innovation that significantly improved stability and reduced the risk of accidents.

The success of this project not only consolidated Leonardo Torres Quevedo’s prestige as an engineer, but also served as a model for future cableways, applying principles that would be perfected and used in cable transport systems throughout the world.

The first passenger ferry was built on Mount Ullía in San Sebastian.

The Whirlpool Aero, the ferry’s current name, has been in operation since 1916 and is suspended on six cables. It offers a splendid view of the Niagara Whirlpool, which forms at the end of the rapids, where the gorge turns sharply counterclockwise and the river flows out through the narrowest channel of the gorge, creating a famous vortex that has appeared in countless Hollywood films.

The Niagara Whirlpool cable car: a masterpiece

Flying over the Niagara River in this ancient cable car is an experience in itself. The rushing water abruptly changes direction and creates one of the world’s most fascinating natural phenomena: the Niagara Whirlpool. A journey of about one kilometre at an altitude of 3,600 feet allows tourists to enjoy a magnificent view during the 10-minute ride. The capacity of the cabin is 35 passengers. Its route is practically horizontal, as the departure and arrival stations are at a very similar altitude.

The ferry that crosses Niagara Falls is a model originally designed by the Cantabrian, later upgraded in 1961, 1967 and 1984. Although the Whirlpool Aero Car travels between two points on the Canadian coast, passengers in this cable car actually cross the border line between Canada and the United States.
