Before starting your trip for the ski resorts, a complete car inspection is unavoidable. This allows to prepare to the maximum your trip, taking into consideration the route and the weather forecast. The car has to be equipped with adapted tyres: winter tyres.

The weather conditions to drive this season are more difficult and this might be dangerous for your safety and that of the others. In winter, when driving in snow, there is 5 times more risk of accident than over the dry road and 10 times more risk over the ice (Source: Institut de recherche des accidents de la rute VUFO).

Winter tyres improve adherence over the wet, snowed and icy road. They also allow to reduce significantly breaking distances. Adapted to be use on highways with low temperatures, especially below 7 degrees. Winter tyres have been created to resist the adverse weather conditions.

Thanks to the treads on the tyre, the snow and the water easely evacuate. Multiple treads all over the rubber of the tyres ensure a good traction. They prevent problems of aquaplaning. They’re formed by different kinds of flexible resins, of caucho very resistant to the cold, of cilicium, of oils, of nylon and other components.

And don’t forget the pressure. Indeed, the ambient temperature influences the preassure of your tyres. In order to drive at the correct pression with the winter tyres, you have to add 0,2b on cold.

Some questions to know if your car ready for the winter

And what about the studded tyres?

This are winter tyres with more than 100 studs. To drive with this type of tyres it’s not pleasant and vert noisy. They are used for the icy and snowy roads. The metallic structures offer more adherence than a simple winter tyre.

However, the most important thing are the famous snow chains. If there is an important snowfall, winter tyres are not enough, you should add a snow chain. But attention, snow chains might be mandatory on some mountain roads when there is too much snow.

Snow socks improve adherence but can not remplace snow chains. In addition, we could prepare to take with us a cooling liquid. If during your holidays in the mountain your car suffers difficult conditions, the engine will be grateful.
