I Love Ski Mammoth United States

You read well. Mammoth ski resort, in California, has announced that it will remain open until August this year.

Summer will have to wait a bit longer in the United States: the ski resort of Mammoth, in California, has announced that this year it will remain open daily until August. How is it possible?

When we think of California, the first image that comes to mind is a summer stereotype, including sun and heat. However, this May, instead of breaking records due to high temperatures, records have been broken in many areas of the state due to the amount of rainfall received. Bad news for those who look forward to summer, but good news for skiers.

The resort of Mammoth already had announced that it would remain open until the 4th of July (a date of great affluence in the country, since it’s the national celebration) but, due to the snow received from storms of the last few weeks, it has decided to keep open until August.

Heavy storms during the month of May have caused the Mammoth resort to receive more than 29 inches of snow only in that month. It has broken the record: it was the month of May in which the most snow has been received, surpassing the record of May 2015, in which 18 inches of snow were received.

Thanks to the snow received in recent weeks, the total thickness on the resort throughout the 2018-2019 season amounts to 715 inches of snow. Currently, there is a 155 inches accumulated thickness in the summits. At the base, there are almost 90 inches of snow. But the storms keep going.

This is the third time in the history of Mammoth that it’s been possible to ski at the resort in August. This had already happened in 1995, when the season ended on August 13, and in 2017, when the season ended on August 6.
